How do you feel about Hand Me Downs/Second Hand Goods?

If I can get something for nothing, it means I can spend the money on something else. That makes me happy and means less waste for landfill.
Everybody wins!Highest debt - £24500

No problems here with second hand stuff here either; most of my furniture (apart from bed and 3 piece) are second hand/ 'antique'. My thinking is that they look good, are robust (i.e. have stood the test of time for ages - should last me too!), and I can sell them on for probably the same amount I bought them for if I want to!
I love car boots etc... you never know what is going to be there! You could pick up a vase worth £1m!, unlikely but you never know!0 -
IMHO, second hand stuff is great!! If you've got a keen eye, a hunter's spirit and a zest for bargains you can get fantastic 1st-rate brand stuff at non-retail prices.
Woo yay

Love 2nd hand stuff - love car boot sales - bought my kenwood chef for £5 last year and its just plain brilliant. Nothing is wasted if we recycle in some way and I love e-bay for 2nd hand stuff - OH would not mind or should I say whatever is in the wardrobe on his side he will wear - regardless of how it looks!!!!!!!!! MENSaving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0

LOL, I dread to think how many hands my house has been through as it's 200 years old
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

2nd hand, 5th hand, its all good. Its cheaper (hopefully), its often has a nice pre-loved feel to it (i'm am thinking pine table here not 2nd hand knickers), you get to feel all green & virtuous as its not going to landfill and if it turns out you dont like it then it can move on again to its next home.
I was the youngest child & youngest grandchild so I had only hand me downs but i can remember minding.
My teenager boys are cool with the idea too, thanks to early car boot sale training & over the last few years ebay. The eldest one chose a pre-worn 'leather' coat from ebay for Christmas for £20.
Not often we all agree is it, but we pretty much do today.

If you want some good arguments for you OH then try asking him if he would ever consider driving a second hand car? The answer will probably be yes. Then ask him about sleeping in a second hand bed with second hand sheets and a second hand pillow, using second hand towels, using a toilet that a hundred people have pooed on  sitting in a bath that another man has sat in ...... 'naked', [/QUOTE]
YYYYUUUUUKKKKKKK GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!:T
ExH wouldn't be seen dead with 2nd hand stuff. When marriage broke up I managed to get:
3 piece suite, 2 yrs old, free from boss who's in -laws were going to chop it up as they didn't like it!!!!! Kept it 3 yrs then passed it on.
Kitchen table & chairs - included in price of house I bought, 9 yrs & 2 houses later still going srong
Freezer - still got
Dishwasher - faulty, free if I had it fixed - cost £2!!!!!!! to fix, tiny hole in bottom meant shorted out, fixed with a washer. Lasted till last year (had to buy new one - emergency!!!!)
Hoover - £5 auction, lasted 4 years.
Ladder - £1 auction, still got.
Single bed frame - blue stained pine, brand new £10 from auction, passed on last year.
Sofa bed - going to tip this afternoon, will be snatched up before it's out of car.
Single headboard - rescued from tip - passed on last year.
Toaster - £2 auction. Packed up earlier this year.
ETC ETC.
Also have wardrobe with 2 types of clothes - Planet, Kaliko, Minuet & Alexon v Primark, George & Tesco - will let you figure out which come from charityshop....A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort
Mortgage Balance = £0
