What gadgets do you have for chopping onions?

This probably doesn't help you much, but in case it helps others- the main thing I have found great for chopping onions is wearing contact lenses!

I never have streaming eyes anymore as I guess the lens forms a barrier but if I am just wearing my glasses I do (and am always quite surprised by this!) I guess the spray gets round the side of the glasses so I think the earlier suggestion of swim goggles is actually a good one (as long as no one watching!)

I second the contacts - sliced all my onions last night ready for freezing while wearing glasses and cried buckets! Bit of a drastic solution if you don't already have them though :rotfl:

Have to admit that I don't chop onions very often. I buy the large bag of Asda SmartPrice ones (quite small at the moment) and peel/chop/slice the whole lot in one go. Put them in large freezer bags and exclude as much air as possible before freezing as flat as possible. When they're a solid lump, I give the bag and contents a good 'whack' on the worktop (have to make sure it's properly sealed before doing this :o). Just grab a handful as and when needed.

I use swimming goggles when I do 8 or 11lbs of pickling onions at a time. Jane Grigson recommends sitting down at a table to do them - so your face is back from the onions rather than standing over them at a unit.

An update on my Nicer Dicer that I bought:

Delivery was really quick (just I wasn't in and then couldn't get to post office to collect for a day or so).
I do think this is a fake. The pciture quality on the box and in the instructions looks knock off to me.
HOWEVER: it does work. I wouldn't dice half a large onion with it but then I don't think I would with a geniune one. As long as the pieces are a reasonable size then it cuts well. Used it for spuds, courgettes and onions last night.
So for what I paid (free delivery) it does the job and no more streaming eyes. I will leave feedback to the effect that I think this is a fake as they are misleading people. But it works and I am happy with that.

I cheat and buy frozen chopped onions from Asda.

Only me to cook for now and I was wasting so many onions, now I just take out the amount I need.

My mum insisted I just had to have one of those Worral Thompson blender/chopper/whisk all in one systems and bought me it (hey I wasn't going to refuse!) so I just use the chopper part of that - just leaves a bowl, lid and blade to wash up which takes about 2 seconds and reduces the eye-torture (although for me I don't get the streaming eyes chopping - it's when they start to sweat off). Also use it for chilli, garlic (I got sick of trying to find a garlic press that worked, didn't break and wasn't a pain in the rear to clean) - anything I want done fairly fine and don't particularly want to smell of for days on end.
