What gadgets do you have for chopping onions?

I loathe chopping up my onions. Even mild ones make my eyes stream (I've even been known to be irritated by leeks ) and despite me not chopping up the root it doesn't get any better.
Having seen those "wonderful" infomercials with those gadgets for chopping and dicing food I was wondering if anyone actually used them and if they were worth the money.

    I'd love a Nicer-Dicer - but £24 on a gadget to just chop onions - I don't think so.

I have a food processer, but it either slices them into very long thin strips or mushes them to death  - also leaves me with a big round piece of onion (a sort of side bit IYKWIM).

I also have a V-slicer thingy (bought for me by my son who swears by his!) that I've been very disappointed with - though I may just get it down from it's permanent home (top of kitchen cupboard) to try it with onions - I'll let you know later if it's of any use

DKLS - that sounds like the sort of thing I want. my poor eyes are watery and sore after chopping just so ideally want something that dices the stuff in a container rather than a mandolin (as they freak me out! I have visions of me taking the top off a finger with those!)

I have a nicer dicer - I got it several years ago at a food fair - it was expensive but i do use it most days! It has been the only gadget that seems to have lasted well and is regularly used. I use it for chopping any veg - I made a huge amount of chutney yesterday and it was great for the apples, courgettes and onions. It is also good for finger nibbles for the kids. I don't think it would be worth it just for the occasional use as it is expensive but with my family of 5 it gets used a lot. Mine has two blades, one about 1cm dice and one very fine.

  • gah - i now have paypal cash wanting to be spent on one of those gadgets... is the nicer dicer really really good?

I am actually decluttering my cupboards at the moment lol but i am planning on ditching the breadmaker and food processor and replacing them with a decent mixer [then i can get rid of my little hand mixer too] so one of these wouldn't take up too much space...

rule my life! which one would you recommend?

Swampy - my mixer is a 70's Kenwood that's still going strong. If you can afford one I'd go for Kenwood every time as they just seem to last forever.
From what I saw of the Nicer-Dicer is looked easy to use - gosh I am so easily swayed by those ads. I even think the 6 second ab will give a the body of a supermodel ;)

You wouldn't happen to frequent a certain wedding website would you? I am Jenbo over there ;)

I usually chop onions etc in my food processer but there is not much control over the size. Also it has to be taken out of cupboard, a space has to be made on the bench near a socket then all has to be washed up and put back. Hardly worth it for one onion!!!!! Thanks Bitsy, I am off to e-bay.
