I was in the same situation when I registered as s/e and was told that I did not need to pay the bill. HTH.
For both of you - I had this a couple of months ago and called up to ask.

You don't need to pay the bill. As soon as your exemption form is registered your bill wil be cancelled.

By the time I got round to doing my exemption form, my NI bill was quite late and I was worried they would fine me, but they still said it was ok, because no matter how late it is, if an exemption form comes through, it nulifies any previous unpaid bills.

Thanks ever so much for your help! :D

Just wanted to make sure the people claiming NI exemption are already paying NI through an employer.

If you are not currently paying NI through other sources, it's worth paying it through self employment as it will entitle you to benefits if you get sick, have an accident, get pregnant etc., and it counts towards your state pension.

Yeah unfortunatley I am paying NI through my normal job! Does anyone know what's best to do when I leave my job to go to Uni come September? I imagine most students don't pay NI through Uni, so if I continue not to pay self employment NI it's not going to be a big problem is it?

Well yeah but I'm more likely to work seasonally as I'll be able to go back and do accounting in the holiday weeks but not whilst I'm at Uni, so I may well have three years with 30 weeks worth of NI gaps each.

I may well get a part time job at the Uni (there's a youth theatre group I may well apply to be a practitioner for) but with mystery shopping and auditing (and the possibility of sellign some handmade gifts) I'm not sure I'll need a part time job during term time.

Only if you earn over £95 a week.

I'm not overly clued up on it, but I do know I didn't contribute anything whilst I was at uni.

Edit - I worked about 8 hours a week term time and then a few nights a week in a pub during holidays. The only time I triggered a contribution was when I worked 6x 12 hour night shifts in a week.

No - you won't get NI paid through uni. If you pay the self employment NI, you'll be entitled to things like incapacity and maternity benefits should you need them. If you don't pay, you'll not be entitled to benefits if anything happened. Look on it as insurance to cover you in case something might happen. If you have other insurances or savings you could dip into, you might be better off not paying it though.

Loads of new jobs on GFK. I'm seeing mobile phone shops, phone calls to support agencies and phone calls to government departments.

Ok, giving Gfk a second chance, I've taken two phone jobs, hope they work out ok, the questionnaire was a joke last time!
