A bit off topic but I was wondering if anybody has an opinion on if MS Office packages can be counted towards taxable allowances:confused:? I was thinking about getting the software4Students reduced price MS Office package as recommended on the freebies board.
I got a really good deal on a new laptop (only for use for MS of course so that’s a few hundred off my taxable total…..:D). Since it doesn’t have Office on it and that are a few MS companies that need to have returns given in Excel I was thinking about getting it for the £35.00 and putting this down for expenses as well.
I still have my old laptop for Uni stuff so my question (eventually!) is if anybody else has put through this kind of expense on their tax return? I didn’t ever claim anything for my old lap top in the last 2 tax returns I sent in so the “business” (i.e. me…:D) should be able to provide one for me….. right? Any thoughts?
Couldn't think of anything witty to say so just keeping the space until I can :(

Hi all! I haven't been posting much in the last few weeks - my job got sorted out and I've been working FT for the last couple of weeks so I haven't had time to post much, but I have still been keeping up with the forum when I can! I've got a couple of questions for you all: 1. Have I missed out on the RE cosmetics store jobs? I really could do with a new tube of their moisturiser! 2. Tax question - I haven't received any paperwork or post regarding the 08/09 tax year yet. The HMRC site says I should get a notification to complete my tax return online shortly after the tax year ends, but I haven't had anything. I know the deadline in in Jan so there's no rush, but do I have to do one? I'm wondering if maybe they haven't sent me any notification because my estimated income from the work is waaaaaaaay below the threshold for paying tax? Any ideas? x

I'd say yes, but you could only really claim a percentage estimate of what proportion of it will be used for business. If you think 50% of usage will be for uni and 50% will be for business, you could claim 50% of the cost as expenses, as I understand it. I don't think you could claim the full amount.

I think paper returns have to be in 30/9/09 and online filing has to be done by 31/1/10

Online - it tells you which bits you need to fill in and it won't let you submit until it has everything it needs. Then it works all the tax out for you :D
Here I go again on my own....
  • thanks becles!!!! so it is not until jan 2010 that i need to submit it :) thats nice!!!

Agreed Becles, also if there are any carried forward losses I think it prompts you to it, whereas on a paper return its quite easy to forget.
Remeber if there is anything due then the payment has to be there by the 31st Jan.
