vets fee putting animals to sleep?

I had one of mine PTS in June and it cost about £65. However, my friend had to take hers to an emergency vet and chose to have an individual cremation with the ashes returned to her, which was a lot more expensive.0

We had our dog put to sleep a couple of months ago. The total was made up of appointment fee, actual PTS, cremation and VAT. We were a little shocked to say the least when we received a bill for £250!

When I had to have one of my dogs pts in June, there was no dose of sedative given just the one that put him to sleep. Is a sedative normal??Debt @ LBM - £25,722 Debt now - £11,811 DFD - April 2012

as the above stakes whilst is a very distressing time, and one of the worse decisions a pet owner has to make animal medicine comes at a cost. and I am sure that the couple would have been given time to pay it and not had payment demanded on the day.
but saying that 195 does seem a lot - but we do not know what else other than the poor animals sleep was involved
The vet I had mine pts at made me pay before they would put him to sleep, whilst I was very upset, crying and shaking so much I could hardly put my pin number in the machine!:mad:Debt @ LBM - £25,722 Debt now - £11,811 DFD - April 2012

Greenbynature - I don't know if it is normal or not, and i guess it may depend on the situation whether a sedative is needed i guess? when my cat was PTS the vet gave her a sedative, she wasn;t at all stressed or anything though, it was done at home, whilst she lay on her cushion. maybe the vet wanted to ensure she was as peaceful as possible. perhaps one of our resident vets/ vet nurses can enlighten us.
i am also very upset that your vet acted in such a horrid and uncaring way. very insensitive indeed. i wonder if that is a reportable offnce with the Royal Veterinary College?

I can't believe your vet did that Greenbynature, I know they need to make money and may have been burned in the past but you think they could make exceptions.0

£195 sounds a lot for just having the cat PTS. As others have said if they had the body disposed of by the vet or a cremation it all adds up. Also maybe they had outstanding bills for care and/or medication?
We had to have Coco PTS at home on 29/12/08. Made what felt like a million calls to every vets within 10 miles until we found one who was willing to come out at 10pm in the middle of christmas.
He was very nice and agreed with us that her time had come. I would say she slipped quietly away with just one injection but with me sobbing hysterically it wasn't very quiet
He charged us just £70 which we thought considering he came to us at that time of night was very reasonable.
IIRC the most £££ a vet was going to charge was £125 (which we have paid if he had been able to come to us):heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -

I doubt it's something they are interested in... they are there for malpractice and for reporting incompetence to mainly but maybe if enough people complained about the vet they might have a word?
The sedative isn't always used as far as I know. Forexample when my darling boy one day needs to go on then I doubt a sedative will be needed, he's that laid back they don't even sedate him for x-rays... his sister on the other hand probably needs a sedative just to allow the vet to handle herAnd putting the final injection in is not something you want to get wrong and miss where you want it to go and therefor take longer and potentially cause a lot of distress to the animal and owner...

When my old girl was pts a few months ago it was about 96.00 and she had no sedative as she was so trusting of everyone none was needed. A couple of years ago i had to have my GS Simba pts and he panicked like mad and the fear in his eyes will never leave me, i didnt know a sedative was available as this would have certainly helped a lot with him so reading this thread im actually tearful but angry that a sedative should have been used.0

I'm so sorry this happened to your Simba, thats so sad, poor thing, its the last time you seen him, the memory cant be nice for you.
We had our weimy pts 4 weeks ago, and it was traumatic enough, but the vet made it as comfortable and bearable as possible for us, left us alone with him for as long as we wanted, gave a sedative even though it probably wasnt even needed. We had to chase up the bill a few weeks later, as our vets are never in a hurry for us to settle up with them, pts was about £42 and cremation about £92, so not as bad as we expected.
Our weimy was so well loved at the vets surgery and I think one of the reasons they didnt want us back in a hurry is that when we went to settle the bill, receptionist was in tears, when we collected the ashes, different receptionist, crying, and I'm dreading meeting up with the other vet in the practice next time my other dog needs a check-up, as I just know there will be tears from her too, she loved him, I just wish everyone else had vets as lovely as ours are.
