vets fee putting animals to sleep?

I ve just got back from a carboot sale where i bought cat food/items from an old couple who told me their cat of 17 years old had just died and they had to pay £195 to have the cat put to sleep. Surely vets cant justify this amount without feeling they play on peoples emotions at a stressful time. While I could never envisage killing an animal myself I cant imagine an injection costs this amount?

Well theres not just the injection that costs the money. The animal needs a dose of a sedative prior to the actual euthanasia Its also the vets time and the costs involved with disposing of the cats body, especially if the owners wish the animal to be cremated. What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0

as the above stakes whilst is a very distressing time, and one of the worse decisions a pet owner has to make animal medicine comes at a cost. and I am sure that the couple would have been given time to pay it and not had payment demanded on the day.
but saying that 195 does seem a lot - but we do not know what else other than the poor animals sleep was involvedI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -
Obviously I don't know the full facts, but based on the info provided it sounds to me like they were ripped off.0

yes is does sound a bit expensive, normally id say around £60 but then they may have paid extra for cremation etcWhat matters most is how well you walk through the fire0

Depends on a lot of things. It cost us around 120 to have our old man put to sleep, because he was seen on a Sunday it cost us around 70 or 80 quid to just walk in the door.
Our vet didn't demand payment that day, he just let us go and we recieved the bill a couple of weeks later with a sympathy card which I thought was a lovely touch and told us we could pay it up if we needed to.0 -
it depends on a few things, perhaps they were also including the cost of cremation too, which at a minimum is around £50, rising to £140 for attended, individual cremations? maybe the vet went out to their home, this could add another £100 or so to the bill?0

The PTS cost itself would be pretty low but as others have said - if it was out of hours, or at the home instead of the clinic then it quickly mounts up. If they then chose to get the animals ashes back after cremation or individual cremation then it's even more expensive... it all depends on a lot of factors so to say they were ripped off without a lot more detail would be hard to determine.DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! The cost of having an catl pts and its body disposed of is pretty reasonable about £80.00. If you want the animal pts and cremated on its own and the ashes returned to you this is where the cost rockets.
When i had my cat pts the insurance company paid for the injections and care but wouldnt cover the cost of the private cremation which i personally thaught was fair because it was an extra expense. Next time if i need one of my others pts i am going to do that and bury the cat in my garden i think as i cant cope with the idea of not getting the ashes back but cant afford a private cremation.0 -
I had one of my cats put to sleep for £65 including cremation etc and the appointment was out of hours so £195 does sound expensive.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

How very sad for them
It does seem like an awful lot of money, but was it out of hours? And i guess the cat might have had other medical treatment before they decided to put the kitty to sleep.:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and setting fire to my knickers:starmod: :staradmin :starmod:0
