Here in West Yorkshire, I live near a bridge over the M62 and there are permanent cameras bolted on the parapet of the bridge pointing down into each lane.

You cannot reach these cameras without high-risk scrambling and climbing over the concrete parapet, but they each bear a plate stating that they are not speed cameras but are used for counting traffic flows.

I suspect that they are permanent ANPR cameras hardwired back to police HQ somewhere.

They have been reported around here as being placed to monitor traffic flow also.

The purpose is to determine which areas of the motorway would benefit from allowing traffic to drive in the hard shoulder at peak times.

The ones I am talking about are white cameras, one above each lane

Seems reasonable considering the areas they have placed them.

Oh I do have a sense of humour. ;) I just get a little annoyed with folks who don't view 'speeding' as an issue. Having scraped the remains of children off the road before now because they've been hit by drivers doing twice the posted limit in town centres and what have you, it's one of my 'buttons' that can be easily pushed.

You learn some thing every day, I was always under the impression bad driving kills, not speeding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Indeed, as long as both you and your vehicle are legal, nothing to worry about.;)

Really? People don't receive NIPs when they're not speeding? You sure about that?

They are actually cameras owned and manitained under the Traffic Master name, and are usually blue. They don't actually 'read' number plates, just monitor the traffic flow. They then feed back the statistics to a central database, where the information is often streamed live to GPS devices, such as TomToms which will instanly suggest a less congested route based on these statistics. In the early stages of this technology, there were only very basic device which utilised 'TrafficMaster', which usually only gave an estimated ETA.

I pressed the thanks button then, i meant to hit the quote !

I think there's a lot of people would disagree with you about speeding not contributing to death on the roads.
Unfortunately many can't argue with you, they've been killed by speeding drivers, well to be more accurate they've been killed by speeding vehicles, but what made the vehicles go so fast ?

Doing "twice the limit" in the town centre is quite different from 85 indicated on a motorway.
