  • I am still awaiting an update following my email from Mr Thoresen back in November, I have sent a polite reminder and will post any updates I get.
  • Hello CitySlicker

I have followed your thread from the beginning and appreciate fully your tenacity regarding this subject.

I noticed when you earlier mentioned bankrupts going more public no one responded to your request much less leaped at the opportunity and I can understand why, it was hard enough to go through it, much less broadcast it to all and sundry that I am a bankrupt! I know I did everything possible to avoid anyone knowing that I had to file bankruptcy, including moving out of my local area.

Despite this and now 3 years on, I would happily sign an e-petition supporting your cause, yes my name would be on it, but as it is also listed on the Gazette, I can not deny what I have done.

I do not understand how the laws here can punish someone for life and beyond for such a thing, particularly in this economic climate where whole countries are going bankrupt.

I do think the Uni law students are the future for this, that the laws regarding bankruptcy are out dated and unfair, and to punish other individuals financially through insurance or other banking issues is just ridiculous, they are quilty by mere association and I do not want this burden of my bankruptcy affecting my children just because they live with me in my old age.

I ask that you rethink the e-petition and Martin should wake up and help or support those in this situation, not every bankrupt was out having a shopping spree, some have lost there jobs, become ill, or businesses have closed due to the economic climate, afterall this site is suppose to be about support people dealing with debt and bankruptcy is one way to deal with your debt.

  • i wholeheartedly agree with the e-petition idea, its easy for people to do and im sure anyone who has ever been asked the question "have you ever een declared..." would happiy get rid of the legality for people to ask the question!!!!!!!!!!!
  • There already appears to be a petition http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/17939 but I've spent the last 5+ years on a insolvency register and don't want to be on another register in the public domain.

Though I agree with this petition I wont be signing it for the above reasons.
  • I would love to start a petition if it gets results, with the objective of outlawing any business to use data on the register that is older than six years to bring it in line with credit reference agencies. The problem is I doubt we could get more than 100 signatures, how could we get around this?

Start a petition on the Government site, post the link here and in any and all BR forums you know of, ask for everyone to share it and get it on FB too! You may be surprised...
When I joined, I needed a name. The forum members gave one to me...I am INAN :D

  • I'm still not sure we will get the response we need, and a poor response to a petition can be more destructive to its cause than no petition. Tell you what, I'll dip my toe in the water. If I get 10 people thanking me on this post in the next 24 hours I will start a petition, how does that sound? We've had thousands of views on this thread, 10 thanks will show me there is the support out there.

The floor's open, let's see what happens.
  • Thanks to the five people who said 'thanks' to my above post, I really appreciate your support, it does sort of conclude what I already feared though there isn't the support for a petition. Although this is an unscientific straw poll survey, all I was asking here was for people to push the 'thanks' button which takes seconds. If I put on a petition that means clicking a link, entering personal details, verifying the return email and that takes a couple of minutes at the very least.

Realistically if I can only get five people on a thread that has had several thousand views to hit a button, there's no chance I will get anywhere near the number we need on a petition. Even with the best will in the world, the people here are passionate about righting this wrong but realistically outside this forum who is that bothered? My biggest fear is we then launch a petition, it hits maybe 50 signatures, then the ABI come across it and think why should they bother as no-one else cares about the issue?

It's not being defeatist and I really do appreciate the views of everyone, but it would be counter productive and could seriously undo the work I have put in for years now.

Thank you CitySlicker for all your effort and also for being realistic about how much 'public' support people are willing to give to the proposed e-petition. Sorry but I haven't logged on for about 3 weeks or else my thanks would have been added in time. I wonder if approaching any of the 'famous' or 'high-profile' former bankrupts would give our campaign a more acceptable face, although many of them have access to limitless funds and therefore the challenges we face are not something they have to worry about. I am aware that we are not seen as a 'sexy' topic but I feel that with the current financial climate there are more of us who don't fall into the prejudiced category of high living/partying/holidaying bankrupts who want a clean slate. People must see the injustice of our treatment. While real criminals (including terrorists) have many calling for their human rights to be respected and upheld I ask what about us? I'll step off my soap box now.
