Thanks for the feedback Izzy, I certainly think you have a good point about OFT.
At the moment I am still resting hopes with the ABI and in a couple of week's time I will be chasing up the report I sent to them a couple of months ago to see how their investigations are proceeding.
I would ideally like to get this wrapped up with the ABI before the end of this year, but if not I definitely think there is merit in your idea. I have tried to get some major groups on board to raise a super-complaint (including CAB, several debt charities, Which? and Martin himself) yet I have hit a brick wall - albeit with some warm messages of well-wishing but a wall nonetheless.
I really am very grateful for all the support I am getting in this forum on the issue though and it makes things so much easier to keep the determination up. I have stuck with this issue for over two years now and one way or the other I will see this through, it is as frustrating for me as I am sure it is for others when things are slow moving but when I started lobbying I always knew this would be the case.
Hang in there and I will keep updating the thread when I get news.0 -
Hi, thanks for this thread, I will be writing to my MP shortly about this matter.
My memory seems to be going to pot at the moment, has anyone tried contacting any high profile former BRs to try to get them onside? Maybe some kind of (I shudder to have to say this) celebrity endorsement would get the powers that be to look at this situation more fully?0 -
I had a reply from Neil Hamilton but it amounted to he didn't have a problem so nothing developed from that.
Problem with celebrities is they tend to bury historical problems so I'm not sure we could get much support. That's not to say this route isn't worth trying more - if you are able to track any celebs down see what they say.0 -
Those celebs who bury the past are (1) the ones who used BR as a step up (with the right connections) or (2) those who become troubled with addiction and fall from grace.
It is ironic that as the financial industry creates more bankruptcies, a growing part of society is ignoring the stigma and taking an even dimmer view of that industry. For example, there is a whole property rental market that now ignores BR and takes personal references with higher esteem than any credit rating. More will follow as they realise that this stigma is more often than not false, the individuals victims as opposed to perps, and the real culprits zooming around in Porches while paying little taxes. By 2015 the present banking system will have successfully devalued itself to a 2nd tier modus operandi. It is a failing system with nobody leading it who has a clue of where to start fixing it. Credit rating agencies for a start! Conflict of interest. Owned by who???? Those few?0 -
I have a couple of small updates for you.
Firstly I have emailed the ABI for an update on the piece of work I originally submitted back in August. At this stage I think I will give the matter four weeks and if I haven't heard any positive noises I will explore the OFT option that has been suggested to me.
Secondly back in the summer I was looking for universities who may be able to consider if the issue of bankrupts appearing on the Gazettes for a lifetime is a human rights matter. Specifically I was hoping legal students may be able to work on this as part of their coursework with an overview from their tutors. Yesterday I received an email back from BPP Law School http://www.bpplawschool.com/ asking if I still wanted their help. I didn't hesitate in saying yes please, so this may be something we have some mileage in.0 -
Thanks for the update CS, much appreciated as ever:):pB&SC No. 298

Thanks from me too, with more and more brs being recorded every day we need people like you to highlight the insurance shamble and discrimination we suffer. The law thing would be great why should we be tarred beyond the grave! Many are here through no fault of their own! Keep up the good workIf you woke up this morning congratulations, you have another chance :j0
