Hi,
Does anyone have a good mango chutney recipe? I love the stuff and it is so expensive to buy. Although i've also noticed that they seem to taste different depending on where you get them from. I like the ones served in Indian Restaurants......yum.
Thank you
Carrie

Try this one ... slightly different from the traditional but it's yummy:
Ingredients:
3 large nearly ripe green mangos
100g citric acid
100g salt
90g methi seed powder
90g tumeric
20g hot chilli powder
Preparation:
Peel one and a half mangos, cut into thin strips and place in a jar. Having washed the remaining one and a half mangos thoroughly, cut into thin strips as well without peeling and place in a separate jar. To measure the amount of water you need, add enough luke warm water to both jars to just cover the mango, taking care not to add too much as the mango may float. Then pour the water (not the mango) into a bowl. Dissolve the salt into the water and then pour it back into the jars as before. Seal the jars and leave for 3 days.
Pour the water from the jar containing the peeled mango into a bowl, puree the mango in a blender and add this puree to the bowl. Add the mango and water from the remaining jar and the rest of the ingredients to the bowl and mix well. Empty the mixture into the jars and leave to pickle for one month.0 -
what are the 'preservatives'? There's no sugar in it- that's got to be unusual. I am intrigued.
However, do you find that this is cost effective? I also love mango (and other chutneys), but find they're often cheaper to buy. I recently recreated a lychee chutney that I'd bought from a stall locally for £1.20. Even using canned lychees from a cheap shop (I don't know which she used) it was pricier than buying the jar- which was tastier too... Mine just needed a bit of tinkering!
£1 a mango would be a good buy, and even so you're looking at more than £2 a jar. I get the pricey but lovely "Geeta's" for less.
Preserve type things using cheapest ingredients work out well, though. Like onion marmalade, or stuff made with garden produce or cheap buys in season.0 -
Hi purplemoon,
I believe the preservative is the citric acid. I made a batch about a year ago and still have some left 'cos the amounts stated makes loads so, yes, I think it's quite cost effective.0 -
its just it says 'some preservatives' at the bottom of the recipe... Looks like it makes 2 'jars'- don't know what size they are, though. I think I could fit a cut mango in a small one...0

You're right, purplemoon - apologies, meant to delete that from the recipe 'cos I've never added any extra preservatives.0 -
We love mango chutney and find it expensive to make as well as buy - unless you can get some bargain mangos!!!
If you have one near Costco do large tubs of it for much cheaper than the supermarket - it is Geetas range and very tasty.

Home Bargains do a really good mango chutney, by "Sood's", very tasty, no nasties on the ingredients and only 59p I think.0
