Hello folks! I've just seen our local greengrocer selling mangoes three for a pound, and am thinking I would really like to make some mango chutney- we always buy the sharwoods jars, but they last for about two meals, so I'd much rather make my own (when I was a student we used to get the huge vats from the local Indian supermarket, but no such luxuries here)! Was just wondering if anyone had a favourite recipe they'd like to share- I googled recipes, but there's so much variation I thought I'd check with the experts! ;) I'd like one that I can bottle up and store, rather than a fridge recipe... even if it probably won't be stored very long! I'm pretty experienced at trad chutney making, but have never ventured into the murky realms of the mango... so any suggestions would be ace. Thanks!

    Hi JonTurner,

There's an earlier thread with some tried and tested recipes so I've added your post to it to keep the recipes together.

Thanks Pink-winged- I did do a search for existing threads but obviously didn't look back far enough- sorry!
  • Hi Jon Turner
Try this recipe, it's one I have used for years, especially now that Sharwoods chut is £2.09 a jar! The batch I made last week costed out at 78p a jar. We only manage to make it last for 2 curry meals a jar!

2 lb mango flesh (about 3 fruit, depending on the size)
    1/2 tsp salt
8oz cooking apple, peeled and chopped
    1/2 pt distilled malt vinegar
7 oz demerara sugar (sure there should be a double r in there somewhere)
1 onion peeled and finely sliced
    1 clove garlic crushed
    2 tsp ground ginger

dissolve the sugar in the vinegar
lob into the pan all the rest of the ingredients
bring to the boil then simmer until thick

best to keep for about 3 months to mature

    good luck!!!!

Made up a batch of this mango chutney yesterday, turned out brilliantly- thanks!
  • We love to have mango chutney with our curries but at £1.80 per jar it goes too fast to make it other than a treat. Try as I may homemade bulked out with apples and raisins isn't the same.
Any one know of a cheaper brand or a full-proof recipe that doesn't have 101 ingredients?
  • I'm sorry I don't have a recipe but just thought I'd let you know that when I popped into aldi the other day they had mangoes reduced to 29p I think, it was one of their super 6, its probably still going on, and as mangoes are ususally so expensive it may help if you do decide to make some. x

Try an Asian supermarket. They often have large pots....you sometimes have to ask for the bulk packs they are kept at the back of the store.

If that fails maybe a nearby Asian takeaway or restaurant can provide it? I have seen it in as large as 20kg tub in the past!!
