Not commenting on whether to reverse into a space or not:D, but the exact same thing happened to me, I was reversing out of a space and was over half way out in my bright red, very visible car, when a BMW going too quickly trying to nab another space crashed into me, she went the full length of her car along my back bumper - which shows how quickly she was going, BUT the law is quite clear, as I was reversing I was to blame. Sorry OP.

I get the point about reversing into spaces, but the way this accident happened was such that even if he had been reversing into the space at the time the other driver would still have taken the front of his car off as he simply did not think to stop and was going too fast to stop anyway.
The other car was a small mazda courtesy car - basically the bumper of our car sheared a dent right down the side of the other car (was going too fast even to be stopped by a big saloon)!
I always thought the correct procedure for reversing was to stop every couple of inches to have a look around and if any other vehicle is driving nearby then you are to completely stop and apply the parking brake until they have passed?
Thats what I was taught anyway, may not have been right but it got me through a test.
Personally on supermarket car parks I continue along whether or not someone is creeping out of a space, unless they are practically out of it, its common sense, you give way to people already on the 'road' that you wish to emerge onto.0 -

Unfortunately, this is what seems to have happened in this case James one driver asumes he has right of way, the other doesn't see him/her and bingo.
You mention common sense. To be honest in such places as car parks, your approach is not common sense, there is no "road".
You quite simply have to be extra cautious, drive defensively, and be prepared to stop for anything. It may be a reversing car, or even one going the right way but againn it could be wayward shopping trolley or even a child:eek:

The "if you are reversing you must be at fault" bit is rubbish......so if im 1/2 way out and another car hits me on the side its "My Fault" Rubbish!0

i would image the other driver was on the wrong side of the road to drive around your OH probably thinking your he was going to look properly and stop.
