Car Park Collision - worried

Thanks for all the replies. My Oh called the insurance company last night and they said he was liable no matter what the circumstances were as he was reversing at the time. OH is in bits to lose his no claims - it transpires that the other driver was on the wrong side of the road anyway and going far too fast, also OH was half a car out into the road with reverse lights on so should definitely have been seen. The other guy didn't slow down, swerve or anything, just kept right on ploghing past the back of the car. Despite all this, he is the liable one. Seems unfair really.
I get the point about reversing into spaces, but the way this accident happened was such that even if he had been reversing into the space at the time the other driver would still have taken the front of his car off as he simply did not think to stop and was going too fast to stop anyway.
The other car was a small mazda courtesy car - basically the bumper of our car sheared a dent right down the side of the other car (was going too fast even to be stopped by a big saloon)!0 -
I always park forward in the Supermarket because you can guarantee some idiot will park too close for you to get by the side and I can't carry heavy bags and can't bend to drag them.
Idiots such as DaveF327.:rotfl:

OP assuming your husband was already making the maneovre then it sounds like you have met the thoughtless poephol from hell. Not much you can really do about but you get these types in carparks who can't just wait 30 seconds. So you will unfortunately have to pay. And your only recourse will be if you know a guy like this:-0

What happens when both sides are too narrow (because the drivers either side of you cant reverse into the middle of a space).
Reversing into a space is easier and safer than reversing out of a space. One is an area you control—the other is an area you do not.0 -

How do you not control going backwards? Perhaps some drivers are less observant reversing.
It is no easier or safer (if you are an able and observant driver). Yes, there are probably more accidents when people are reversing, but this is down to ability and attitude. My method (driving in forward) gets rid of the ones that cant even be trusted with a shopping trolley.0 -

What he said was that the parking space was an AREA you can control. In that no cars are going to go into it while you are parking. The roadway you are reversing into is beyond your control because you don't have 360 degrees vision at all times and people can get in your way - pedestrians and cars.
It's only a game

Correct. Reversing into a space, especially during rainy or cold weather, is preferable and safer. Cars without a rear wiper can have less rearward visibility than those with.
In cold weather the car (and rear windows) are usually clear of fog and ice by the time you've arrived at your destination, however parking nose in, and returning to find frozen and fogged rear windows makes reversing out a much more difficult proposition than simply clearing the main windscreen, rolling the passenger windows down, and driving out.0
