PS3 or Blu-Ray player?

Hello

So yesterday I bought an LCT TV and my cousin said it might be a good idea to PS3 instead of a Blu-ray player as I can do more with it e.g. Play DVDs, games and record TV

I don’t mind if its 2nd hand but am worried that it wont want work when I want to record TV shows so am wondering whether I need to get a new one
1. Does the PS3 record TV?

2. Considering I dont have any Blu-ray DVDs (May buy some in the future) or PS3 games (dont really play computer games), is it worthwhile to get a PS3 or is it better to get a Blu-Ray player?
Thanks

you cant record with either of them, if you want a blu-ray recorder you need to buy the new panasonic blu-ray recorder, it is about £900 for the cheapest version of it.

It really depends how much you want to spend and what you want to do. You can get a Blu-Ray player for half the price of a PS3, but then again, you can do much more with a PS3.

A PS3 will play games, browse the internet, watch BBC iPlayer, play your music and videos, etc.

If you don't want to do any of those things, just get a Blu-Ray player; if you do, get a PS3.

A PS3 by itself wont record tv. You need the PLAY TV attachment (And even then it will only record to hardrive)
Recordable blurays on the other hand are VERY expensive (Both recorders AND discs).
Personally id be looking at freeview/freesat recorders with internal hardrives

You're right but you can then transfer the recorded film/show from the hard drive to a pen drive & play it on the PC with WMP..................

It's also great for wirelessly streaming music etc from your PC which you can then play through your surround system & it also has a web browser which came in very handy for me when my PC had to go in for repairs for a week.......
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!

no you cant transfer them to a pen drive, you cant transfer them to anything. at least i havent found a way yet. the ps3 is an amazing piece of kit though. the playtv really improves the picture quality to almost hd and its easy to use. you can transfer files from your pc to store on your ps3 ie music and videos. plus the new feature on the ps3 is the free music channel videzone where from 100's of old and chart videos you can make your own music channel and download them to mobiles. im always amazed by it everytime i switch it on!
  • Hmm, thanks for your replies.

I suppose the main thing I wanted it for was a) to play DVDs; b) to record TV.

I wasnt hoping to spend that much so I dont want to buy a PS3 and then the additional equipment or spend a huge amount on a blu-ray recorder.

Might see if I can get a free PS3 with a new phone contract though.......

For the price difference, it's a toss up. We've got a Samsung BD-P1500 here, and while it's a great Blu-Ray Player, I can't help thinking for the extra £100 or so the PS3 would have been the better choice. A player is a player, after all.

We use PS3 + PlayTV at the moment. We've stuck a big fat HD in the PSP for more recording space. Works well for us. PlayTV is £60 on Amazon at the moment.

We have a few Blu rays, but we tend to find they're not worth the extra money unless it's an animation you're watching, so we don't usually bother. But it's nice to have the option. We have a handful of games but I'd be lying if I said we played them more than a couple of times a week.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
