Well thats 40 or 80 hours of TV. Quite a lot for me anyway.0

Don’t forget the PS3 will also be constantly updated via the internet if any new features appear on Blue ray, so effectively making it future proof:beer:0

Im fussed because I want a DVD player and the ability to record TV. I understand that I'd need to buy extra kit for the recording of TV.
Option 1 - Buy a PS3
Option 2 - Buy a PVR and a DVD player
Option 3 - Buy a Blu-ray player with recording facilities
My search started as a search for a DVD player then kinda escalated0 -
Would like to thank everybody for their input though. I have learned a lot0

If you're not fussed on Blu-Ray or games, I'd go for option 2.
You could get a nice up-scaling DVD player if you wanted to get the most out of your existing DVDs and your new TV.0 -
This was £20 is asda not so,long ago:

there are dvd recorders with built in hard drives i am sure. so you could record to the hard drive or to a dvd as well as obviously being able to play dvds. anything on the hard drive would be transferable to a dvd as well. they also usually have built in freeview recievers.
so i agree with another poster who doesnt understand why you are thinking of a ps3 when you dont really care about bu rays or games.0 -
A PS3 just won't be as good at recording TV as a dedicated PVR, so that would have to be ruled out.
You're then left with buying a PVR and a DVD player or a BluRay.
Some of the BluRay players you can get now do a lot more than play disks - plenty with networking etc built in and even some with a youtube interface.
Personally, I'm waiting for a *really* cool BluRay to come out, got enough DVDs to keep me going in the meantime
