Hit and run by an uninsured driver

I have been hit today by a driver who made a runner after i took his reg plates. I checked his reg details on askmid.com which has the insurance details to hand. My car is fully comp and is in the register the other one don't. What happens now? Of course I am going to loose my excess £250 because insurer will have no source to claim from and my 5yr no claims discount, aren't I?

I'm with Direct Line.

Don't want to get your hopes up - but I think I heard on one of their adverts you don't lose out if you get hit by an uninsured driver? I could be wrong though.
Best to ring them as soon as you can to report the crash - sorry to hear what happened to you.

Well it says they won't in the policy documents. I do have three independent witnesses I took details from. I reported to the police and insurer. We'll see... THIS IS SO ANNOYING I drove for 13years without any accident (with some breaks of course) and some idiot driving like a lunatic almost hit people behind me then smashed my car and drove away.

Those websites are not always up to date, so they might be insured.

    Have the told the police?

I reported it both to DL and Police.

If they were I don't think they would leg it.

I'm no expert but have had a recent (not at fault) accident where the 3rd party fled.

If the police have not already done so they will send you a witness statement to fill in. This includes details of the incident, time, date, location, witness, diagram etc. The police will use this to consider if the other driver will be prosecuted for leaving the scene of an accident.

You insurance company will attempt to write to the thirds party's insurance company (if it exists). If it does exists they will tell them they are liable for the incident and it will progress from there. Meantime they are also likely to ask you get your car repaired, or at least a quote for the repair.

This is based on what happened on my (recent) experience. I was lucky that the third party was insured, and eventually admitted liability even though I had not witnesses. I am not sure what happens when/if they find no insurance for the third party.

you might want to check if the car is taxed at:

    http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk (vehicle enquiry option)

If it is taxed there is a good chance the registered keeper is known anyway, I guess.

I filled the form @ the station. They are taxed (just checked) so I guess they are insured as well (or they were at the time of buing the tax). What if they deny liability what happens then? I do have three independent witnesses.

The witnesses will help a lot. Your Insurance co will have or are going to ask you for all the details too, if the other part denies liability. hopefully they admit liability, or it might go to court.

IIRC if the police decide they left the scene of the accident (witnesses will help again) they might prosectue (which, IIRC is up to a £1K+ fine) or might offer them the option to go on a kind of better driver course.

Relax, there is not much you can do now, it could take weeks to sort.

Hopefully direct line have told you the will suspend taking the excess off you and will claim it back from the third party, at least that's what my insurance co (morethan) did.

Possibly your insurers would contact the witnesses to get statements? That's what happened to me several years ago when someone drove into me (off a pavement too!) They all gave written statements and it helped no end - I didn't lose any no claims and all my costs were met.

I dont think they have other choice all the witnesses gave me their details which i passed on to the Police and Direct Line. They (witnesses) also have reg details of the guy that hit me and know that it was blue bmw and that i was stationary at the red light so i guess i have a quite strong case.
