Could have sworn you can just log in online and pay using a debit card.

Funnily enough, that is what I have done no longer than 15 minutes ago.

Funnily enough in 10 years I've never had a single charge. Can't think why.

Thanks for the clever comments daveboy :T
I am sure there are people who work away on business in foreign countries who can't guarnatee internet accesss where it's easier to set up a direct debit.
In general it's a very good way of making sure that payments are made on time.

Yeah, I tried that (also Nationwide card) and it never bloody worked!

And yeah, what a stupid comment.. DD is supposed to be the EASIEST way to pay bills and if you are on holiday it is not the SAFEST to use hotel internet for paying by your card really...

You'd have to ask the OP the answer to that.

Direct debits always seem the easiest method but time and time again they create problems (numerous threads like this one and duplicate payments because people have paid by card or at a bank and then the direct debit took some too).

Far easier to do it yourself at your own convenience.

Find it quite funny how people criticise me but can spend plenty of time here on MSE.

It took me all of about 3 minutes to pay my Tesco card earlier. It's not hard unless you just want to create something to moan about.

I know what you're saying and agree to the extent that I also use DD but lets be fair, the last thing the OP needs is smart comments. Thats what we were picking up on.

Yea IB is easier and you're 100% in control but I do believe that if they can amend the balance to show expenditure within seconds they should apply the same rule when we send payment in, i.e. it gets credited within seconds.

The technology is there - they just want to keep milking more and more from us......

But the difference is, that if they mess up DD it's their fault, but if you get run over with a bus or end up unconcious or just without PC in the hospital they don't have to give a damn....

It was the smart comment for no reason that I didn't like... The OP didn't do anything wrong "funny enough".

This is true in that the customer is protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee scheme. However my view, is that if the bank does mess up and fail to collect the funds, then penalise me for it (as appears to have happened in the OPs case) then I don't want the hassle of having to sort it out.

I'm in agreement with Daveboy of this one, I'd much rather have the responsibility and make the payment on internet banking. If I mess up its my own fault and I'll take the consequences, but this hasn't happened in over 17 years. Theres an old saying that goes, "If you want a job doing properly, do it yourself" ;)

I agree. For every thread where someone has been charged and\or lost a promotional rate through forgetting to pay ontime, there is another one where a miss-understanding over Direct Debits has caused a problem. Its a double-edged sword and what works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another.

I also have just paid several cards using Internet Banking and it couldn't be easier. I can choose how much I want to pay and when I want it to leave my account, so much more flexible than assuming a Direct Debit will work in the way I want it to.

Don't take me wrong, I haven't got DD set up on any of my cards and never had a problem yet.

However, there are geeks like us :rotfl: and there are people out there who hear a word "bill" and run a mile (my husband:rotfl:). For these people to pay the way we do is not an option.

I am in agreement that you can have it that way, but if that is what Daveboy was comming at then he needs to re-write his post because that is not what it read.

Anyhow, droping the subject now. Not here to argue with some smart ar**
