Lol I thought you'd have gathered by now that I have no idea about all this sort of thing. The Internet connection works fine except when I uninstall Norton, when it fails. Then when I reinstall Norton it comes back.
Further up the thread someone kindly posted a link to a techie website where someone else was having exactly the same problem. However the suggested solution was so far over my head that I didn't even embark on it.
I think I need to get it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing. Thank you for your suggestions and help, I do appreciate the time and trouble that people have taken for me.

Bogof_Babe wrote: »Dogmaryxx can I ask you about Revo? You know when you tell it what you want uninstalled, and it runs through the process then says it is checking for remaining files? Well it lists a whole load of folders and subfolders that are just coded numerics and letters, no indication of what they are. Some of them are in bold type, and it says to check those carefully, but there's not much point if I don't know what they are. Anyway I didn't select any for deletion, but maybe I should have selected and deleted the bolded ones? Perhaps the bold was its way of telling me those are the ones that need deleting?
Yes ,you should have ticked all in bold type to remove all traces of Norton.Trust the programme and have confidence in yourself. You can do this.0 -
Thanks for replying. I did wonder, but not knowing what the files in bold were to do with, I was nervous.
Think I'll leave it until tomorrow now, had enough excitement for one day!

You seem very reluctant to just uninstall and then reinstall your modem as suggested earlier. You have the Freeserve CD so it should be straightforward enough. Clearly Norton (as usual) will not die quietly and wants to take your internet connection out with it. Doing an endless Sys Res just means you are in a loop and will never be free of Norton. Get rid of it and then address the connection issue from scratch. No free lunch, and no free laptop

You are right Macman, I'm not making any progress like this so I'd better bite the bullet.
Obviously I'll need to be online while I uninstall Norton (won't I?), so I do that first, yes? Then uninstall and reinstall Freeserve (or do I leave what remnants there are of it and just stick the CD through again?). Despite Freeserve not connecting, it is still on my system, just won't respond when I try to connect through it.
Then finally install Kaspersky.
See, always so many questions...:o

No, why do you need to be online to uninstall Norton? You already have the Norton removal tool so use that.
Then uninstall Freeserve completely and remove any modem software too. Then set up your internet connection again, then Kaspersky. No free lunch, and no free laptop

You make it sound so easy
.
If I'm not online I won't be able to click on the link in post 3 of this thread. Perhaps I need to "save" rather than "run" it? Then hope I can find it again!
I do have a desktop icon for Revo Uninstaller now, so I could use that, especially as I now know that I have to delete all the bolded file names that I didn't do before. But you seem to have your doubts about that one.
I'll sleep on it. Brain dead now.

Yes, just use 'save' instead of 'run' and save it to your desktop (same as you would with any program you don't want to install immediately). Then install it whenver you are ready. No free lunch, and no free laptop

The reason you can't get on-line after removing Norton is because Norton isn't being fully un-installed correctly - see here:

Although the link suggests using the Norton removal tool, which you've already tried....
Stick with Norton - it works and is available for not much more than a tenner (Buy it Now) off Ebay. It had a bad name in previous years but seeme to have got it's act together now

No connections etc. Just a happy Norton user who also spent several wasted hours installing Kaspersky, only to be disappointed when I managed it! Kaspersky isn't such a bargain if you have to pay for PCWorld to sort things out, or even worse buy a new PC!

The problem with AV Software etc. is that you'll get ten different opinions from ten different people!0 -
Thanks for all those comments polybear, all duly noted. Interesting comment from Kaspersky user on that Computer Active site.
Must admit that since I partly uninstalled Norton (to the point of "file not found" when trying to remove it via Control Panel), my laptop has whizzed along speed-wise, which it never did with Norton active. Also I have paid £40 for my Kaspersky CD so am reluctant to just throw that money away.
I'm off on my travels again tomorrow for a week, so will probably leave this problem until my return.
Incidentally, stupid question I expect, but is it absolutely essential to have a bought security package at all? Doesn't Windows firewall prevent a lot of potential threats from infiltrating? If I never open an email attachment, and just stick to surfing the web, only going on known and trusted sites, shouldn't I be safe enough?
