Glad you found the TPE service from Glasgow Cen to Manchester Pic, it's not that slow a service (15min approx slower to Preston), however, it does take you off the main lines until you get to Manchester. But to be fair it's just as slow as going via Edinburgh (both take just under 6 hours)

To be honest it's just another option for thefatcontroller to consider.

Yeah i always forget about them because there are not that many and never fit in with times a lot of folk who want to get somewhere so never recommend them.

Id never really tell people to go east coast way anyway unless they were adamant that price was all that matters..

I will have to disagree with on this one, but this is my personnel opinion as I've found TPE from Edinburgh or Glasgow to be a good alternative to Virgin trains on the West Coast, they might not have as many services but their prices make up for that.

But its impractical for someone who is travelling down to London which is what we are discussing here.

But using your own quote below, if price is an issue, then the impracticability of going via Manchester is not a problem any more, as people will take the longer routes to save money and that's what this forum is all about, money-saving.

Yes but even by going via manchester and splitting are you really going to save that much to make it worthwhile because of the connections too? I doubt it very much.

There's only one connection as the trains run direct from Glasgow to Manchester and then direct from Manchester to London and to a lot of people that use this website any saving is better than none.

A walkon off peak return is £82.60

There are £22.50 advance singles readily available - so nearly half price. Or £21 each way travelling via Newark with an hour extra journey and a walk across town in Newark

Edit - Booked on the East Coast site that £21 fare comes down to £18.70 and even £14.25 on a few trains. You have to specify 'via Newark stations' to find it
