Rail Travel: Tips on Cheap Tickets

Route is get to Euston by a combination of train and tube, then Virgin to Crewe, change (normally) for Chester, but there are some through ones
The walkon off peak return fare (includes the underground) is £70.50 a head - you need to leave Cheshunt at 1342 or earler or 1801 or later. In between is peak and you don't want to know what the fare is.....
You can shave a bit off this with advance singles, £35.50 out £14 back if the times suit - and the peak hour blackout is shorter.
Any rail site will sell you these tickets - just choose one that doesn't charge a fee. eg http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/
Or visit Cheshunt station - preferably when they are not busy0 -
cheapest way I've found so far is from Euston to Crewe on London Midland using their £10.00 offer and then Crewe to Chester at £12.20 return fare(obviously I'll have to get to Euston first which I think is about £5.00 from where I am), so about £42.20 per person return (if I've done this properly!)0

Okay, I've got an interview in Staines next wednesday at 2pm. I want to travel from Manchester-Euston then Euston-Staines, I can find the cheapest at around £80, can anyone better that for me?:beer:0

There is no £80 fare - don't know how you arrive at one.
£70.50 off peak return, leaving Manchester by any train after 0930 and Staines after 1730. Through to Staines. Route London. Buy on the day.
Manchester 0935, Staines 1307 with tube transfer Euston to Vauxhall included
You may be able to shave a bit off it on later trains from Staines using advance singles.0 -
Hi all,
I'll be shortly moving to Doncaster but am working full time in York (5 days a week).
I have a 16-25 railcard which are not valid on season tickets.
The standard cost for a Doncaster-York season ticket is £172.10.
Are there any options to avoid such a pricey monthly ticket? It's almost a quarter of my wage! The problem with this section of line is that there are no intermediate stations at which to split-ticket it. South Yorkshire Travel Passes wouldn't be any good either I don't think, as Doncaster is very close to the North Yorkshire border.
Any other options for me?:: Scarborough Athletic FC ::

There IS a bus service between Doncaster and York on which a day return journey is £4.70 (Arriva Yorkshire Day Saver)
BUT it takes over 2 hours with a change in Selby and you can't get to York before 1000am.
Somehow I think it's not what you are looking for.
I can't think of anything else - someone local to the area might.0 -

Hi
I just have a couple of questions. We are planning to book Advance tickets from Milton Keynes to Blackpool. This will involve a change of train at Manchester. As we have to take specified trains, if the train from MK to Manchester is delayed (for any reason) and we miss the specified train to Blackpool, will we have to buy new tickets, or will the train company honour the ticket as the connecting train was late? The train companies are Virgin Mk to Man and Transpennine Express Man - Blackpool.
Also is 15 - 20 minutes enough time to disembark and find the next train at Manchester Picadilly with husband and 2 kids (11 and 14) in tow?
Many thanks for any help.

Sorry I posted this in another thread, but no-one replied, perhaps its a silly question and I am worrying un-necesserily. Could someone set my mind at rest.
Thanks0 -

Thanks
The easy bit first... 15 mins should be enough time to change trains at Manchester Pic.
If you are delayed on part of a journey such that you miss your subsequent train, the rules say that you should be allowed to travel on the next available train.
So what is a journey?
If you are travelling on two seperate tickets, then it could perhaps be considered as two seperate journeys. But, the National Rail Conditions of Carriage say...19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire journey...0 -
That's a tricky one. (probably why no-one replied).

if you are likely to be delayed so that you miss your second train, I would ask the guard on the first train to endorse your tickets. May make life easier.
Thank you, thats a big help.
