Glad you've got it sorted. You'll be able to have a kip on the late one as you don't have to worry about changing trains!

I'm looking for return tickets (or two sets of singles) from Lancaster to Chester.

The standard return (off peak) price is £30.10

I've tried splitting at Manchester which brings the price down to £24.70, or splitting at Liverpool brings the total down to £24.00 each.

Does anyone know of any other routes that could be taken to bring the price down further ??

Dates I am looking at are 12th April - 16 April.

Thanks in advance for any help and assistance.

Crewe or Warrington would be worth checking out - though I think the latter involves a change of stations

Remember you don't have to use the same route both ways

Thanks for the reply - Unfortunately they are working out just as much.
  • We're heading down to London for 3 nights on the 23rd of June. We normally fly but would like to do the journey by train this time if we can find and economical way of doing it. Can anyone assist with pointing us in the direction of a decent deal? Our nearest station is Montrose (between Aberdeen and Dundee).

You're too early for Advance tickets. They come out around 10-12 weeks ahead of the dates they are applicable for. Try again around the end of March.

    Can anyone help me?
I have to go from Huddersfield to Rutherglen, any time on Friday and return any time on Sunday.
The cheapest I can find is the off peak return at £85.90
Normally, booking weeks ahead and splitting the tickets it's about a quarter of that, but this is an unplanned trip for a funeral.

I don't mind what route, how many changes etc. on the way up, but would prefer to minimise changes coming back as my Mum will be with me then.

    Many thanks for any help.

    This Friday:
Manchester Piccadilly - Rutherglen is £24.50 single leaving at 9:16 or £28.50 single leaving at 13:16 or 17:15. These are Advance tickets so book a.s.a.p. and collect at a station.

    This Sunday:
Rutherglen - Manchester Piccadilly is £17.50 single leaving at 9:04, £21 single leaving at 10:12 or £28.50 single leaving at 11:24. Again, these are advance tickets so book a.s.a.p. and collect at a station. Note that because of engineering works, these train connections will involve a coach between Carlisle and Preston.

Huddersfield - Manchester is £14.80 for an Anytime Return (can be booked anytime, including on the day).

I am sure you can work out train times from Huddersfield-Manchester and return to connect into the trains at Manchester Piccadilly, but if you need help I will happily assist. Remember to leave plenty of time at Manchester Piccadilly on the outward journey as the Advance ticket to Rutherglen has to be used on a specific train.

Even if you get the most expensive single tickets, the total comes to £71.80, a £14.10 saving, although you could save over £10 more depending on what trains you get.

I suggest you buy these tickets from the East Coast website (www.eastcoast.co.uk) and the Advance tickets have to be booked in advance and they may disappear or the price may rise if you don't book a.s.a.p.

I hope this helps. This is only one possibility. Another is splitting at Preston instead of Manchester, but I think that this is a similar price and this involves buying Advance tickets from Huddersfield to Preston, obviously a bit more restrictive.
