Couldn't eat like that every night!
some of the dishes looked really nice but I've decided not to buy the book because I already have recipes for similar things that are more in my price range... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

But (sorry to repeat this
) I’m still in shock at the stupidity of cheffy Paul’s saying to a previous family that they had too much cheese in the fridge and had to use it up. NO Paul, cheese does NOT need using up, it will keep for next week in the fridge and for weeks and weeks if grated and frozen!
I thought he just meant "oh, there's loads of cheese, we can certainly make use of that in this recipe..." rather than "oh we'd better use that up before it goes off".There's such a lot of criticism of the families on this thread, could we cut these people some slack please?
I agree - there has been plenty of negativity and not enough people saying good on them for achieving what they achieved, or even just for being willing to try it in the first place.Imagine if they chose hard line OS’er types for this series - 'Wow, we've saved you 3p on your weekly shop ....' :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
LOL - indeed!0 -
but what about the prawns?:o0

There's such a lot of criticism of the families on this thread, could we cut these people some slack please? I doubt any of us came to OS knowing everything and we're all still learning; to quote squeaky from the Welcome to Old Style thread ‘You wouldn't expect to pass your final exams after one day at school, and you shouldn't expect to be able to do the same here in Old Style.’
Just to clarify, for some of us budgeting has been a lifetime thing, something I HAVE to do week in week out, these famillies just seem to me well off and not in need as much as most of the country.:j Started my weightloss journey, its neverending!! :j

he definitely said something like, you've got far too much cheese left over, pass me out those three packs and we'll use them up' at which point I faintedthink it was just making a point about his mantra to 'use up what you've got'
there's some good stuff in the programmes but they're shooting themselves in the foot if they're not encouraging economy with quite expensive items (cheese and salmon)... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

It has never been put forward as a programme for the needy. Why shouldn`t the more well off get some good tips?0 -

Why are they shooting themselves in the foot? This is a massively popular programme and lots of us can afford salmon several times a week. It is our choice, we don`t smoke and never ever get take aways etc and we run a small car that does 80 to the gallon. It is about personal choice and I would choose to spend on buying salmon. After all we are what we eat0 -

I'll say it again..............
Its NOT about budget cooking, its about gourmet/gastronomy cooking for the best price.
There is a difference. The programme is doing what it set out to do.
It never said it will show you how to feed a family for under £5, it said it will show you how to enjoy great food at reasonable prices.
A lot is being made on here about using wine in cooking & other more expensive ingredients, but these things are what life it from being run of them mill, to a bit special.0 -

exactly! these families are well off but taking a drop in income and the programme is about them trying to reduce their living expenses;
I haven't seen any claims on or about this programme, about it being of use to people on a low income; that's why I can't understand some of the complaints on this thread... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
