its all made by roddas anyway whichever big brand name you buy

I can believe that, my point was that there was no choice apart from the most expensive supermarket own-brands ;)

I'm afraid I had to give up watching last night, it annoyed me too much!

I thought the programmes would cover all budgets, including people living off benefits, but everyone so far has had such huge budgets it is not even vaguely relevant to my situation. £400 per week is more than I earn.

Also, for the dinner party challenge, they had to cook a three course meal with all their leftovers, which I thought was great. Then they had an extra £2.50, which I thought was reasonable, but then I realised they had an extra £2.50 per head! And the leftovers included 3 seas bass! I rarely spend that much per head when I have people over for dinner, without any extras!

It is fair enough that people at the higher end of spending need help cutting down, but so do people with £40 a week for a family. I like the ideas behind it, but this show seems to be made entirely for the middle to upper classes.

Know what you mean even my Christmas shop is less than half of that:rolleyes: they're not in the real world are they???

But if you are on a £40 pw week family shopping budget then I doubt there can be much sustainable cutting down.
Can you do real gastronomy on £40 also.
I'm not saying you can't cook nice family fare (Jamie Oliver ministry of food), but I don't think you can cook gastronomy. The basic ingredients are too much, when you are using salmon, clotted cream, fillet of lame, etc.
I'm working class & I enjoy this programme very much, as much as any of Jamie's;)

yes, its aimed at higher earners so far but then I've not heard them claim to do otherwise? ;)

Isn't it making high earners bring their shopping budgets down to more middle of the road levels?
They say the average family spends about £150 (I read it somewhere the other day) & if the average family are 4, then they are getting these high spenders down to a comparable average.

I just watched prog 3 on iplayer and I am SO impressed. Another lovely family pulling together and all enjoying wonderful food. There is no way that this series is aimed at low scrimping budgets but hey there is enough of that gloom out there. This is a bright and sparkling programme and I hope they make another series. It certainly lit up my afternoon

Is that £150 PW? Seems quite a lot.

The recipes in the Economy book are quite pricey, like the ribs and beans one, you need spare ribs AND belly pork. Now whilst I will make this, I can't see it being a staple on our table.

I did the braised mince recipe, and ended up making the one I marked for Spag bol, into another chilli because it was so nice, but it's expensive, once you buy all the bits and bobs you need to go with it (we aren't that keen on rice) so sour cream, guacamole or avacados (not to bad when Lidl has them for 29p but OH can eat 3 at a sitting) then you need the tortilla wraps, and the recipe calls for about half a bottle of red wine.

Scrummy though. Think it might become a Saturday night special in our house, we don't buy takeaways much but when we do, it's on a Sat night, and it can easy set us back £15, can get more bang for my buck making chilli and the extras.......I want to eat that chilli again and I just took out my last bag of braised mince and was intending to make it into a cottage pie tonight but the call of chilli is becoming too strong (Chilli is my fave food, on nachos, in a bowl by itself, bit of rice, in a lasagne.....No wonder I'm struggling to shift some more lbs!):rotfl:

Yes £150 pw, it could have been on TV, it was recently.

Its not an economy cook book, its an economy gastronomy cook book.

Yeah I know it's economy gastronomy, was just saying I can't see many of the things becoming staples on our table like Spag bol/chilli/pasta bakes are because the cost does tend to be higher.

Couldn't eat like that every night!
