How do you know that your modification might not be even better than the original recipe, or at least better to your taste? Why rely on someone else's idea of what will taste good?
I'm not saying there is no place for recipe books -far from it, I love 'em:D but I love using them for inspiration rather than as a set of instructions.
Obviously you can't substitute a tin of sardines for strawberries, or marmite for chocolate:rotfl: And you do have to be careful with cake recipes, but even those are open to adaptation -adding nuts, different kinds of dried fruit, frash fruit etc, just don't tinker with the basic batter mixture. Use your common sense and improvise -it is much more economical;)0 -

I've only read the first 120 odd posts so i'm not sure what turn the discussion has taken since then, but i've just sat down to watch episode 1 on iplayer, and I have to say i've really enjoyed it.
no, there's probably nothing here that anyone who's followed OS won't already know but the format is friendly and approachable (vital for the target audience - people who are terrified of the kitchen) and i really like the presenters (Allegra has made me giggle several times).
I've been inspired to try recipes that i've never attempted before and i'm very much looking forward to watching the rest of the seriesknow thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -

Because lots of people like me love sport, and it's live, and economy gastronomy isn't going anywhere, it will still be there next weekI have ( to my amazement) enjoyed the first two episodes, both of which I watched on iplayer. If you take a lot of the views on this thread many, many people have watched it and not enjoyed it, finding the budgets too big
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -

And the TV companies record the sport, so it will still be here next week too. Come to think of it, they could simply delay broadcasting it for an hour, I doubt it would make any difference to the outcome.0
