I think treats of some description are essential. For me it's a glass of wine at the weekend or a read of a good book. What I don't do is buy a new book every time I'm in need of a pickme up. I have learnt to utilise the library, swap with others or pick them up very cheaply from bootsales etc. Queenie used to write about having a pamper box which was full of treats that you could dip into whenever the urge arose. Old style isn't about deprivation and wearing a hairshirt:D

I cooked a whole chicken last week and we ate it all in one sitting - I'm a rebel :D

If it's not fun, it's not worth doing in my opinion, make it fun or find another way to save the pennies.

Nothing worse in life than being bored and depressed.

I'll 2nd/3rd/4th Haribos coke idea - but make mine a rum please (I'm a bit more sophisticated than she is :p)

Thanks I suppose it would help if I had a goal in mind. At the moment it's no bank charges ie stay with 3k O/ D ( that k thing makes it seem a bit better!):D

What did you previously regard as fairly ordinary but now see as a treat? Me ....wine/crisps,magazines,hair cut,all manner of foaming bath stuff, clothes which aren't purely functional, holidays, meals out.

I can only say I use OS as a challenge. And since I am rarely challenged in life it makes for interesting living. yes I've got a bit of a tightwad over some things but I am doing this so that we can have money to spend on the things we really want. Most of our money went on food shopping and yet I never seemed to have that much in the trolley. Now I find it a challenge to stick within the budget etc. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but I enjoy the experience. I've discovered that I don't actually need half the trappings of modern life so perhaps it's been less of a culture shock for me.
Come and join us on the daily thread, we're a lovely bunch really ;)

Randomer- have you actually congratulated yourself on the progress you have made so far. It might be baby steps but you will have made changes [I think it's human nature to ignore where we've made improvements and just focus on what we're not getting right] It's part of the natural old style cycle to fall back in some areas and I'm always falling off the wagon. The difference now is that I don't go and blow £100 on clothes that when I look back at I don't like- instead I go wild in the charity shop with a fiver or last week I spent a fiver in £land on 15 gorgeous glass beaded bracelets. All different colours and yes I didn't need them but the pleasure spending those 500 pennies have give me has been worth it. If I feel a magazine splurge coming on I trawl the supermarkets and take their freebies- I've sussed that it's the beautiful photos and the glossy pages that give me the buzz, with bubble bath the discount shops are worth a look or buy a cheapie and add rosemary or sprigs of lavender. Books are my real achilles heel- I could happily live on one of those squishy sofas in our local Waterstones. When the urge to splurge arrives I go to the library and stagger home with 10 or so gorgeous tomes. I usually find when I've had them for 2 weeks I'm happy to return them and probably wouldn't have wanted to own them permanently

Thriftlady, reading your post reminded me of a radio program I listened to last week.
A guest was a French supermarket cashier and she commented on how she hated it when the live crabs were put on the conveyor and scuttled off :rotfl:
I couldn't imagine that in Tesco either.

    Evening all,

    (a non OS post...!)

Just to say thank you so much for all the congratulations - Graduation Day was fantastic, such a brilliant atmosphere even though it went in a blur! I have put pics on my facebook (and also one of me doing 1960's style for my graduation party last night too...).

Hence there has been no OSing (other than taking a packed lunch with us to eat before the ceremony :) )

MSD, Tristan has definitely got more lives than a cat!
    Bargainbird, Spike is GORJUSS!!!
Bitsy, hope your DH's bike ride went well, good for him.
Redruby, glad your DD didn't do the permanent colour...

I know there was loads more I wanted to put but (1) I have forgotten and (2) it would be too much non-OS stuff....

But ((((hugs))))) for all those needing or wanting one. Normal service will be resumed very soon...!!!
