Just to add, the Estate Agent is perfectly entitled to contact both solicitors, and a good EA will chase the sols up and keep things moving.
When I bought my last house the sellers' solicitors were diabolical. The sellers themselves dealt with the secretary throughout the whole process. There was a problem with the deeds and their solicitor was always 'unavailable'.
The Estate Agent was brilliant. It was a small local EA and they knew both solicitors. They were on the phone to them on a daily basis, and were really on the ball.I'm a retired employment solicitor. If they worked quickly you wouldn't understand why their bills are so high.
