Smoked mackeral makes a lovely fish pate which can be a light or a sustantial meal depending on whether you serve it with a couple of pieces of melba toast or chunks of yummy bread and crudites or with baked potatoes

You can also use cottage cheese, ricotta or quark depending on what you have or what is cheap

Jamie did mackerel last night on the fish fight thingy (excellent programme) I think with Thai spices...looked really good and recipe is available on Channel 4 I think.

Smoked mackerel needs no cooking, maybe heat if you want a hot meal, really lovely on brown bread with a squeeze of lemon juice.

I love mackerel, have even eaten it raw!

    Hi Rhealea,

As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to the main thread on cooking mackerel to keep the ideas together.

Good Afternoon! Its a beautiful sunny day.

I have a problem - I bought some Mackerel (£3) (whole not smoked) from Sainsburys the otherday to make this devillied mackerel dish

I thought I would give it a go to try and be abit healthier and I really enjoy smoked mackerel but I have just unwrapped the fish and really don't like the idea of fins and tails etc and its full of bones.

I don't know whether I can bring myself to cook and eat it!

Has anyone ever had anything similar, was it nice? I keep thinking its going to be really oily and greasy and just really don't fancy it now.

My other option is to give the fish to the dogs and cook something else.

Do I potentially waste the other ingrediants if I don't like it or cook something else and give the dogs some Omega3?

    I should know my limits!

    Mackerel chowder

I made a version of this in a slow cooker a while back. Seriously yummy!

As long as you don't mind chopping your fish to bits first :)

Mackerel's a nice easy fish to fillet - maybe just do that, they it will seem much easier to deal with...

Mackerel is soooo yummy. We eat it fresh in the summer, I usually just slap it on the bbq and grill it until it's soft and delicious - mmmmmm

The bones look off putting but once it's cooked properly almost all of them should lift out in one go along with the backbone

If you can bear it cut off the head, tail and fins, wouldn't bother to try filleting until its cooked, as someone else said, bones will then just lift out....it will be delicious I assure you. You don't need to do the trimming until cooked if you find that easier.

    Enjoy!
