    Hiya

My neighbour kindly gave me some fresh mackeral today but I dont know what to do with it.

He told me I cant freeze it as it will turn to mush. And it had to be used tomorrow at the latest. I have never cooked it before and am a bit stuck.

    Any ideas gratefully received! :D

    Thanks
  • Is it gutted? If not, I'd gut it now.

If it's in fillets, you could grill or fry (it's an oily fish so pan only needs to be lightly oiled. If it's whole, I'd season it, wrap in foil and bake in oven. Nice with lemon, new potatoes and a green salad.

It doesn't go well with most sauces.

    Hi

Thanks, yes it is in fillets. he said there is a row of bones down the middle but thats all. that sounds nice. not sure kids would eat it (more for me!!!! :D )

I did wonder if i could put a sauce with it so wont bother now.

    Thanks again.
  • I think it would be fine with a tomato type sauce but definitely not a creamy one.

Really fresh mackerel is delicious - and good for you too so I hope your kids do go for it.

This thread may give you some more ideas:

  • Send them to me & I'll eat them !!:rotfl:

They are supposed to go well with rhubarb - it's a tartness and oily fish thing. But my preffered way is coated in seasoned flour, and fried. Then served with a small salad and crusty bread (which used to be white before the days of diabeties and low G~I).

Lightly grill it, slap on a bit of pepper & stick it in a sandwich.

It's a Glaswegian Friday late night special ... delish !

Grilled on the BBQ is the best way for fresh mackerel.

Wrap the fillets in foil, with some garlic, chilli, ginger and soy sauce....nom nom nom!

Or...if it's not BBQ weather - pan fry it first (skin down), then simmer with some dry cider til it bubbles down to a sticky sauce. Also very nom!

cook it the fishermans way - heat some butter in the frying pan - put in the mackerel - fry for a few mins each side. plate and eat! (I would season with salt and pepper though and serve with a nice salad.
or - make mackerel pate , cook the mackerel then de- bone it and flake, add salt and pepper and some melted butter. either use a food processor or a stick blender to whiz it until smooth. delish.
