You can souse them in vinegar if you have a slow cooker.

I catch hundreds feathering from Chesil Beach in summer, and this is how my wife cooks them (after I've had a few from the frying pan):

Fillet the fish and place in slow cooker pot, add a few peppercorns, a bayleaf, chopped onions & herbs (such as parsley, fennel or dill) and equal parts of vinegar & water to nearly cover.

Cook on high setting for approx 3 hours (NB this is for a slow cooker - if doing this in an oven (that works!) 1.5 hours).

These will keep in the 'fridge for at least 7 days, and we serve with salad.

Although mackerel don't freeze/keep well in a freezer (fillet before freezing), I find this the best method of cooking them, because even if they are a bit 'squidgy' after defrosting, they will firm up and produce a lovely meal many months after freezing.

If doing on a BBQ, do you wrap it in tinfoil or just throw it on?
I love mackeral, but I usually do 'em in the oven.

Just season them and chuck them on. Close your eyes and imagine you are by the sea in Portugal :D

I agree with others, mackeral is delicious on the barbeque.

Probably far too late for the op but do you have a dishwasher? :D

    Hi betterlife,

Well done Mr betterlife! :T I love mackerel...especially barbequed. There's an earlier thread on cooking mackerel that may help so I'll add your post to it to keep all the replies together.

    This thread might help too:

Cooking fresh mackerel without an oven ?

And while you wait for a smoker, this thread may be of use:

I have 4 fillets of mackerel, that came out of the freezer yesterday (someone left the door open so had to let them defrost).

I am the only one in the house that eats them, but need some inspiration with what to do with them. can i cook them then refreeze like chicken?? or will i just cook 2 for breakie and give the rest to next doors cats:confused:

I have them soaking in milk because i read somewhere that reduces the fishy smell..

any help much appriciated.. thanks for reading
