Gooseberry sauce is a traditional accompaniament to mackerel - it is to cut the richness as apple sauce does with pork or seville orange does with duck.
Here's a version of the recipe:

Google for others. Frozen or tinned fruit can be used.

That's my suggestion too. Or rhubarb, which works excellently ith some star anise, a little ginger and soe chinese five spice

Our neighbour gave us some which he had caught. I cooked a couple for DH and Dd but even the smell made me feel ill. In the end I froze the rest (treble bagged) until bin day.

My sentiments exactly, I love loads of fish, but find mackerel too strong. Ugh!

I love mackerel, gooseberry or rhubarb would be my suggestion to cut the richness, I sometimes just 'dry fry' it and drizzle over some lemon or lime juice

When really fresh there should be no smell from any fish, even an oily one like mackerel.

I love it smoked I buy it quite a lot for lunchtimes if I am going to be working at home I always put a little bit of horseradish sauce on the bread and don't use any butter or spread... Never really cooked it from fresh except on the BBQ which is very yummy...

Went through the freezer last night and found some frozen smoked mackrel - any ideas what I can do with it to make a substantial meal for me and DH - kids won't touch it!?

    Thanks

Maybe add it to a pasta bake, or with a jacket potato.

Or with potatos and peas. I'm sure someone will be along soon with more imagination :D

I have the tinned type with salads, so I guess you can cook yours and have it cold.
  • I would make a type of kedgerie with it; rice, peas, curry powder, egg (optional) and the mackeral. This would be nice and filling.

How much is there? Is it enough for one portio as a fillet? Could use it in a mixed fish pie, curry, pizza, with omelette, mackerel pancake?
