he can actually go several days without a drink.
i think what he wants is an easy option, you know pop a tablet and the cravings, shakes etc disappear but battling any addiction there is no easy option or magic pill.
i think your right he hasnt had a big enough shock but then what would be big enough.
i just wish i could do something more constructive to help him but i really dont know what to do.
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A

he went from monday to wednesday without a drink and when he did have one he had to hold the glass with both hands and literally take his mouth to the glass rather than the glass up to his mouth.
so far i know he didnt have a drink monday and he didnt have one yesterday. so i'll see if he can do today or if his body can only cope with 2 days without a drink.
thank you all for your help :)

I have heard of the not being able to stop drinking straight away, but I don't know if its true. Someone will.

The truth is, he will drink for as long as you allow it, if he can't/ doesn't want to stop himself.
It sounds like he hasn't had a big enough shock to make him really want to stop. Does he struggle to not drink, or is it a thing that just goes on all the time?

Come back, because others will be along to give their take on it.

My friend's mum was told this.. that she must drink just a little every day or her body wont be able to cope. Having said that... she's got liver damage and lots of health problems because of her drinking so

he is staying with me at the moment as im trying to help him,
    I just noticed this.

Is him staying with you helping him? Honestly? Or is it giving him an understanding helper, who lets him do what he wants.

    I don't know, I'm just asking.

You can have a serzsure and die from the withdrawal of alcohol i had a librum detox of ten days but most had seven to counter this. i have stopped on my own a few times. but not for longer than 3-4days the mental obsession always got me drinking again. when i was told i cant just stop drinking i thought that was a green light to drink. as i cannot have just one so surgestting i had only enough to get me well was a bit strange looking back. bit like the diary i was given to see how much i drank. i thought ok i can drink. i always lied with that too.

the doctor is rght in my opinion to not give ant drugs for depression. as they can work the completely opisit way if taken with drink. i know from bitter experience, i lied to my doc about my drinking. his being honest thats a good thing. in risk of gettimg shot down in flames from the nonAA boys has your chap thought about going i do and it works wonders for me when nothing else did.

I just don't believe it is the only way ;) I would rather suggest people try AA than not do anything. I had a counsellor and relatives to help me through :)

I don't think anyone would shoot you down in flames lewt for suggesting that people should go to AA.
All me, Al and some others say, is that it can work for some people and not for others. Its not the be all and end all of stopping drinking.

crispeaters friend has gone to detox centres and drop in sessions, maybe he has tried AA, we didn't get enough info I think. Something obviously isn't working for him.
Maybe you can get him to come on here crispeater, or another online forum?

I have never heard of this in my life and I have dealt with some very low bottom people. Is this something that the doctor said in front of someone else or is it something that your friend's mother said that the doctor said?
