Hi my mother and father in law went for a pub lunch
Ordered 2 steaks medium rare
When they were brought out they wasn't happy with them so they ask for them to be redone
The chef then told the waitress that they were medium rare and they would have to have them
They refused to have them as they were unhappy with the steaks and unhappy that they were being told they must have them
So they said they didn't want the meal and would leave
Manager said that they would still have to pay even though not eating the meals and if not they would phone the police
They left the pub and the manager came out and took their car reg
Anyways 2 days later the police turned up at the house claiming they had walked out without paying for the meals they had
They explained the circumstances and the police said they would have to contact trading standards for advice
They have contacted trading standards who have said they will have to pay
How can this be right having to pay for a meal that you didn't even eat
Any advise welcome
Thanks

They should have paid.
They asked for medium rare and thats what they got unless they can prove otherwise then they dont have a legal basis to pay.
Yes it was off from the restuarant not to fix them but then they have no legal obligation to do so as they supplied what they offered. A medium rare steak. sadly their version of medium rare is different to yours.0 -
They should have left their names and addresses (and if necessary proof of ID). It is for the restaurant to then take action for recovery of the price if they wanted to pursue. They would have a defence to any claim that they had not received what was ordered.
If they had followed this, it would have nothing to do with the Police.0 -

Not sure i will find out
2 out of 2 say they should of paid
I am very surprised at that
I would of thought if you wasn't happy with a meal and they refused to change it you would of been well within your rights not to pay
I'm surprised
I could understand if you eat it and then complained but not this way
Very surprised at the replies0 -

1). Restaurant/pub whatever it is takes op's parents to small claims court to recover their costs.
2). Restaurant/pub pushes police saying that they refused to provide details for above civil matter and therfore a dishonest element to matter and offence of making off witout payment for police to investigate.0 -

Did they?
Why is it their opinion that counts and not the customer? If the customer doesn't get what they asked for, why should they be made to pay?
Seems all very grey to me...0 -

At last someone that thinks the way i do
I thought the world had gone mad
If you bought a tv and wasn't happy with it you would take it back for a refund wouldn't you
It's not like they tried to swindle them out of anything
If they would of ate it and then said it wasn't any good then i could fully understand
But they didn't eat any of it
I'm just baffled by the whole thing0 -

Actually, you wouldn't be legally entitled to a refund in that instance.
This is a bit different though...You go into a shop, pick out your £1000 telly, say "yes sir, I'll take that one, please". They come out with a toaster. Would you still be legally obliged to pay £1000 for the "television"? Don't think so...0 -

But said toaster can be put back in the storeroom and sold at a later date, in this case the steaks can not and therfore the pub will suffer a financial loss.0 -
Isn't it the role of a pub to have happy customers and encourage repeat business?
One person's definition of rare, medium etc is different to another. I always describe how I like my steak and ask them what their definition of rare is and err on the rarer side. If it is less cooked than I like, I ask for it to be cooked more and they have always obliged. If they overdo it initially, then it is their mistake.
Anyone with any business sense would give the customer a steak to their liking and not let it escalate to this ridiculous level.
If it happened to me I would be slating the place on review sites and tell them to whistle for their money.
The place is obviously going downhill and will be out of business soon anyway. I have seen it happen when people go to these aggressive lengths over a meal.
Ps - if the OP wants to PM me the place, I shall make sure I avoid the place. An average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T:rotfl: :rotfl:
