  • How can I find out if an insurance company is trustworthy?
I am 65 my husband 69. I have high cholesterol he has high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
We want to go to canada for 14days.
I got a quote from Free spirit over £500
and one from Avanti at £93.
I have never heard of Avanti but am seriously considering using them. They were very helpful on the phone and after answering the usual questions re medication offered this quote.
Does anybody out there know anything about Avanti.

    Hi

I think you will find www.staysure.co.uk have lots of medical conditions covered free of charge and are well priced if you have serious conditions

    Hey barney!

Thanks for letting us know about staysure. Having just turned 50 on Christmas Eve and seeing all the pre-existing conditions it covers by default, it looks pretty good. (Still has all the usual disclaimers in the actual policy booklet though, but no surprise there)

I couldn't have used it last year (being 49), but it's definitely an option for the future. Having said that, my health has improved so much since my initial post last year that 3 of the 4 conditions I had then should be clear by Sept 1st when my Free Spirit cover runs out. The fourth condition is well under control, symptom-free but actually not in the default list, but I'm sure that a quick phone call would confirm cover's not a problem.

I intend to have my 2009 holiday(s) before the Free Spirit policy runs out so won't be looking to take out the next policy until Summer 2010 anyway so will be well clear of the medical condition minefield by then.

Anyhow thanks again. You've just proved once more how brilliant this website is.

    Take Care.

does it make much difference if a party of 4 travelling have cover with different insurance companies?

    Adult 1 wiuth co X
Adult 2 with co Y pre existing conds
Adult 3 and child under seperate policy with Co Y.

Although Adult 3 and child can get better quote from another company...any insurance advice welcome.

It can be difficult if you have a claim as there are four different Insurers to deal with and you may find one does not want to pay out etc.

If you do use the seperate companies you need to ensure each company is aware of any existing medical conditions for any of the party travelling and any people who the trip depends on whether travelling or not eg business partners and immediate family etc

there was not much other way of doing this as the insurance companies charge quite a premium to put a few family members on a single trip policy compared to having individual policies!
I take your point, suppose its a risk to take interesting to know what other people do when they travel as groups with other family members e.g. with parents, grand parents, uncles etc.

Well, they covered my wife who had cancer in 2003 but hasn't had treatment since. Glad you found something anyway.

i have noticed a few companies have a 5 year rule of not covering either the person or condition if they have had cancer within last 5 years....
