I thank the bus driver as i get off the bus. I even occasionally accidentally said 'thanks' as i got off the train on the way from school when i was younger out of habit which was a bit embarassing!

I say thanks when I get off the train if I'm at the door the guard opens.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I have a market sweet stall and reckon a good 80% of kids don't say please or thank you...they aren't taught manners like we were. What really annoys me is when they are accompanied by an adult, and they don't respond either....The occasional adult will prompt the kiddie to say thank you.
My favourite though was a little girl who's Mum had just bought a large bag of sweets...I offered them to the kiddie who grasped the bag...The Mum turned to the kiddie and said..."What do you say?" The little girl looked me in the eye and said..."Let go" :rotfl:

Good manners cost nothing. Always say thank you to anyone who provides a service. I used to work in a large supermarket and it is probably half and half, half of people are really nice and say thanks and the other half think you are a piece of rubbish and you must be stupid to work there, so speak to you as such. We are all people doing jobs and should be treated with respect

I normally say thanks to the Postie if I see him and sometimes the bus driver when I get off. I usually say thanks in banks and shops too.

Part of it is my upbringing to have good manners (and treat others as I would like to be treated).
Also, I know this sounds strange, but sometimes I am very lacking in confidence and my OH is always telling me that I don't look people in the eye whe in shops etc., so saying thanks is me showing I genuinely appreaciate what they have done for me, even though I did not give them good eye contact.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

The rudest person I ever saw was a woman on a bus - an old man was standing in the aisle, it had been puring with rain so he was wet, and nobody offered him a seat. I was also standing, or I would have. Eventually a young girl tapped him on the arm, I thought she was going to offer him her seat, but instead she said "Excuse me...you're dripping water on me!"

    I was gobsmacked.

Shockingly I have an even worse bus story. One time a blind lady got on the bus and sat down in the disabled seat area with her guide dog. Two women with the usual massive buggies got on, and I kid you not, they grabbed this blind woman by her arms and led her to some seats further back so they could sit in the disabled area. And as if that wasn't enough, they ran over her guide dog's paws when they got off.

I still wish I had the guts to say something at the time, but they probably would have just mouthed off at me and I do think the bus driver has some responsibility to tell these women they can't sit there if a disabled, pregnant or elderly person gets on. It's awful how someone in a wheelchair will get on the bus and these mothers will all start sighing to make it quite obvious they're nothing but an inconvenience to them.

Speaking of elderly people, I commute and every so often we have a few elderly people get on who are obviously just going on a day trip, and they usually talk loudly about how they need to find a seat until someone gets up for them. I do stand up for elderly people and pregnant people (although got to be careful with the latter as I'd hate to offer my seat to someone who just looked pregnant and actually wasn't!!) but it does irk me when people get on at peak time and expect a seat. The majority of the time they could have simply got on the train an hour later and they'd be loads of seats. It just seems unfair tired commuters have to give up their seat to people who don't have to travel at the most jam-packed, uncomfortable time.

Anyway got a bit distracted there. I say thank you to everyone, usually even if I'm unhappy with the service because I'm sad like that. I'm also one for apologising to people who walk into me. I've since stopped doing that because people where I live tend to speed towards you assuming you'll move, bloody rude of them and I now make a point of standing my ground to throw them off. I feel really sorry for taxi drivers and I'm always very polite to them. I remember getting a taxi in London in the early hours of the morning, and the taxi driver was visibly shocked we weren't aggressive or throwing up in his car. He even had a conversation with us the whole way there saying what a pleasure it was to have us as passengers!

I say thank you to most people on the OP's list too.

I once even thanked a bus driver after he'd practically catapulted me through the windscreen after got up and pressed the bell, which seemed to indicate to him that he should do an emergency stop!
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
  • I always thank the bus driver.... when I go back to London people look at me like I am actually mad!! a good loud thank you!! good manners!

    i also am a thanker :-)

I used to be a bus driver, and most people generally said thanks (or cheers drive which I hated!!) but people can also be so rude!!

I was brought up on manners, they dont cost me owt and they can get me far. However, if someone is blatantly rude to me, I will be ruder back. I walked into a chemist a couple of weeks ago directly behind some random woman, and instead of holding the door for me, she let it shut in my face :-O Stuff like that, there's no need for.

PS my cat always thanks the postman for me by sitting behind the door waiting for him so she can pounce on the letterbox as soon as she hears it being lifted up....!
