Someone just posed this question in a thread here: -

I always do this and my mother did as well. I also thank people who come to do things for me, even if I am paying them but not, obv, if they do a rotten job.

I thank :-
  • Postmen
  • Bus Drivers
  • Taxi/Minicab drivers
  • Gas men
  • Elecy men
  • Dustbin men (especially HUNKY ones)
  • Builders/decorators
  • Sales people in shops (when they assist me with purchases)
  • Dentist
  • Doctor
  • Hairdresser (natch!)
  • People who let me out of junctions when I am driving
  • and EVEN Washing Machine repair men

Am I alone in this?
I am a cow so cannot speak Bullshine but I do recognise its smell when I come upon it.

i say thank you too but then i usually take liberties in the first place!

for instance i said a big thank you to the man who came to fix my cooker (under warranty from comet) but only after i got him to re-plumb my leaky dishwasher which had nothing to do with comet :p

i also say sorry to bus drivers a lot, which one of the drivers i see regularly finds annoying.

Sometimes a little politeness goes a long way and can get you bargains :T

The postman? No. Because he doesn't give a monkeys, regularly leaves parcels on the doorstep and !!!!!!s off, and never ever gets recorded delivery signed for.

I used to thank the postmen, but don't anymore - because I don't see him now - my post often doesnt get delivered until lunchtime, when I'm at work. Previously the post was delivered betweeen 7:00 and 7:30.

Have you tried turning him off and then back on again?

My postman does this! Although he leaves it in my outside cupboard rather than on the doorstep but doesn't always leave a card. Sometimes things sit there for days!

Always thank busdrivers, taxis (if they give good service) shop assistants, the postman, tradesmen, the dentist, GP, bank clerk, trainguard, hairdresser, people who let me out on the road (especially them) .... anyone really, it's just polite, innit :D

Can't stand bad manners and people who think they are owed service.

I always say thank you to our lovely postlady when she knocks on the door with a parcel or a signed for letter, as she is always friendly and nice. I also always thank bus and taxi drivers, and anyone who helps me out really.

I thank anyone who provides a service, good or merely acceptable not someone who provides shoddy service.

I wonder why it is, we feel obliged to tip some providers like waiters, taxi drivers and hairdressers but not others like shop assistants, bus drivers and posties?

NO....Today's post got thown through the open porch window,
good job the sender packed the electronic item well.

As for buses, NO...I'm sure it can't just be me that gets the nutter who drives like a madman, and then nearly puts you through the windscreen as they try to stop somewhere near the bus-stop.

Good manners cost nothing and if someone does something for me then I will say thank-you. Nothing irritates me more than standing back and holding open a door while shopping to have someone sail past you without so much as a smile, let alone a thank-you. The Next sale on Saturday was a perfect example of rude and igorant people who couldn't even utter the T word when I'd stood back to let them pass, buggies and all. I'm sure the world would be a much better place with more smiles and more manners!
