Someone just posed this question in a thread here: -

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1816683&page=2

I always do this and my mother did as well. I also thank people who come to do things for me, even if I am paying them but not, obv, if they do a rotten job.

    I thank :-
    • Postmen
    • Bus Drivers
    • Taxi/Minicab drivers
    • Gas men
    • Elecy men
    • Dustbin men (especially HUNKY ones)
    • Builders/decorators
    • Sales people in shops (when they assist me with purchases)
    • Dentist
    • Doctor
    • Hairdresser (natch!)
    • People who let me out of junctions when I am driving
    • and EVEN Washing Machine repair men

    Am I alone in this?
If people do something for me, then I thank them. Costs nothing, plus I think it's only polite.

I even thanked the midwife who took blood from me today. :)

I thank any one who's provided a service or helped me in any way. I'm terrible for apologising constantly though, especially if someone else gets in my way in the street - I apologise to THEM! And more often than not they ignore me or give me a death stare. That's people for you!

I always thank the bus driver in the UK , over here tho you just get off and dont say a word.

I bet bus drivers hate saying "no problem , or thank you" up to 50 times every main stop!

I always thank bus drivers. They get me where I need to be, they're helpful if you don't know where you're going ("I'll give you a shout when it's your stop"), they have a natter with anyone who wants one (makes life a bit less lonely, I'm sure) and they look out for your personal safety. When I was younger, there was a bit of trouble on a bus I was on and the driver wouldn't let the guy get off at the same stop as the woman so he couldn't follow her home. He didn't need to do that, but he may well have prevented something awful from happening. Drivers go above and beyond sometimes.

I also like the way that all bus drivers wave at each when they're driving (although this isn't restricted to bus drivers - taxi drivers and driving instructors do it too). I don't know why, but it makes me smile. :)

I've always wondered if thanking the driver is a local tradition though, as I don't really see it much in England when I go down there.

The first sign that elderly MiL was developing what DH now refers to as 'err..problems' was when she stopped saying 'please' and 'thank you'.

Seems like there's a lot of it about!
