Quite, so one would think the rational thing to do would be to not drink.
However, we STILL drink when we know it is bad for us.
That's the maddening thing about alcohol in us - it tells us we don't have a problem, and then when we finally realise we have a problem, it tells us that life is not worth living without alcohol.
This is alcoholism, and there is a lot of it about.
To no-one in particular - If you are not getting the desired results from this thread then please investigate other methods. You can do both.
The GP, CBT, AA, Rehab, Buddhism, whatever.........
There is no point sticking with things that don't work as it destroys self esteem and makes you feel worthless.
Giving up alcohol is not easy, and one needs lots of support.
Try all methods until you find one that works.
Alcohol is so cunning that it will tell you not too. It will destroy promises to be AF, that you made sincerely. It will tell you this is ok.
It is partly a disease of memory. You forget the bad stuff, the promises you made to yourself and others. Thus you drink again, believing this time you will have it under control. That rarely happens, if ever.
When relationships have been destroyed, children lost to other people and the social services, the physical body ravaged, then sometimes people stop drinking, and get off the descending elevator. Others do not.
If people think that what happened to Tangochick's deceased husband could never happen to them, think again.
It can happen to all of us.
Many people on the street come from respectable places. This disease gets them to that state. This disease is democratic, and can get anyone.
Things happen gradually - I am sure many people went from a few AF days a week to drinking everyday. And then drinking a bottle of wine a night.
However, if you asked them when they were not drinking everyday if they would end up in a few years drinking a bottle of wine a night, they would have dismissed that outright.
However, a bottle of wine can (and in many cases does) lead to a bottle of vodka a night....and that's a slippery slope which is not easy to get a grip on.....................
The decision to stop drinking comes from you alone. It is internal. Support or lack of from the OH is not the factor. Pestering children will not work.
Starting a new school term, new job, different partner, diet, exercise, etc will not work at keeping you AF unless you really want to give up.0 -
Hi graeme
Your post hit home a few truths for me...thankyou.
Yes as individuals we can only stop drinking when WE WANT to...its tough but there it is.
The progression to a bottle a night is sooooo easy to slip into ....then it moves on to stronger stuff as you say...a bottle of vodka or worse.
I have only been AF since Saturday...thats 2 days. Btw I often just stop for months & months...then for no reason I just start again. I think I have found the reason why I do this.
I have been to the supermarket today & noticed that they promote alcohol everywhere....by the freezers, checkouts...at the end of the bread aisles....even by the door on the way in ! Surely this is asking for trouble...the supermarkets are not being responsible in their marketing. Alcohol is a drug...a very dangerous, addictive drug....it should be kept in one part of the store & people who want to buy it go to that part of the store specifically. It should not be used as a marketing ploy to tempt customers to buy more !!
So often when I start again its usually because everywhere I turn there is another wine rack...or boxes of 18 cans of the latest brew on bogoff !!
O dear...soapbox time...sorry...feel better now !
