wow... that's a long time... what triggered you to change?

I had a bad divorce and that was about 10 + years ago its been a bit of a nightmare since - but we are now a happy unit of 3 + 1 new partner and the bad bits are still there but not so in my face anymore.

Without sounding too contrite - reading this thread and identifying with alot of it - finding the honesty here and the courage to look at my drinking and think OK what am I doing - when you do it at home in secret - no one knows. I still got up everyday and went to work, still functioned like many folks I thought an alcoholic was the kind that looked like tramps - and I wasn't as bad as that - but I know I do have an issue with drinking............also.....

Turning 40 and finding that weight that use to just keep about 8 and half stone - creeping up and up wards towards nearly 10

I am the size of a gnat so for me thats a lot of extra weight.

Getting bladdered again and again (by accident of course ) and finding my life overly complicated again just cos I did more stupid stuff whilst drunk in company or not in company by phoning folks, emailing or texting when drunk, or by just being so paranoid and self obsessed.

Not going to bed for about 2 years and sleeping on the sofa cos I couldn't face going to bed without OH and drinking myself to sleep every night.

Living on my own again (3 years ago I moved out from my OH and moved my family 300 miles away) the drinking had crept up and up and up over 2 years and when my brother came to stay - turned up for a weekend and stayed for 10 months (who only drinks occasionally) I found myself drinking in secret so I could still drink but wasn't willing to 'share my alcohol and also let him see me drinking everyday.

looking at my now 'teenagers' and not wanting them to see me drinking and also to be able to project a more 'healthy attitude' towards alcohol.

Also addiing up the money I spent on booze when I was cutting back so hard on food - once I started adding up the real money I was spending - it wasn't pretty and a bit stupid when you think of the money I was trying to 'save' on food shopping.

Um and my Dad died at 53 from booze - I fear its a slippery slope for me and alcohol - so this is many of the reasons.

hope its not too much x

It's probably been mentioned before but the main problem with alcohol is how cheap and readily available it is. Saw a recent offer on hotukdeals of £2 for 4 cans of fosters, 50p a can! cheaper than cola in some places... So the incentive to save money is lost... The government need to stop the supermarkets offering these ridicuously cheap deals (lol bit ironic me saying that on a money saving site but you see what i mean..)

    Honest post Fay...Well done :T.

A lot of your content I can relate to especially the secret drinking and thinking that I did not have a problem and looking outwardly to everyone that I did not have a drink problem and did not drink every day and scrimping on things for my family when I was spending £50 a week on beer :o.

It happened on Holiday when My OH said that I had loads of beer in the tent and was I going to drink all of it that day. I did have 8 cans and was surprised that she did not notice that I was drinking 10 cans a day for ages. I must have hid it better than I thought.

  • I can relate to some of that. When i used to go out drinking with my mates, the more you could drink the better the night out 'Apparently'. I often used to find myself coming home legless and lying to my GF about how much i'd drunk / spent. Often this resulted in us having to ration our money towards the end of the month for more improtant things like food and petrol to get to work. How selfish. It's taken me a long time to see the error of my ways and i've tried to change to be less selfish so many times before and failed, but this time i've changed for good.
