Zara, I assume it would be done via PM and/or email. When volunteering as a moderator elsewhere, and having to suspend or ban members, we PMed them the warnings, but the suspensions and bans were both PMed and emailed as they were not able to log in for 2 weeks/forever so wouldn't otherwise get the message for 2 weeks/ever. I don't see Martin as being the type to want to put a forumite in the stocks so to speak...
    ;) Thanks for that

Many thanx to the posters who told me what PPR means - I would never have worked that out!

I've read all the posts here briefly, but as far as I can see it doesn't address what I think is a problem.

The star system is flawed. If I post a comp, I get "credited" with one post. If some-else replies along the lines of "this is mine" or "I would love to win this" or in short not something that contributes to the comp, just a bit of chatter (which I do enjoy, so please dont misunderstand) they also get "credited" with one post. The driving force of this board is the comps which are posted but IMHO not enough credit is given to the people who take the time to search them out, or watch the programmes, or read the mags etc. I have noticed that some people will always "add" to a thread but rarely if ever post a comp - but the posts add up just the same.
Reading this back, I probably haven't explained that very well, so I hope its understandable. :o

I think those are some great changes, especially the ones protecting newbies. They can have a really rough time if they inadvertently say the wrong thing and get posters backs up. I can't say I've come across cliques anywhere, so I'm not convinced about that one. I've seen the word 'cliquey' bandied about by people who have been disagreed with, but never experienced it myself.

Finally, please could you clarify the 'thanks' issue - I think a good post anywhere should be 'thankable' even if that thanks doesn't add to the posters total thanks count (reputation).

Unfortunately, in the arms people thank a post for simply saying "hello". I do it, and it's done to me, because now the arms culture is such that if you don't you appear rude. Also some users thank any post on the thread they're on and I personally I do the same.

Therefore it might be better that in the arms the thanks facility should go.

However, as I said before, I think it should stay in DT where it is used more judiciously and topics are often useful and interesting.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

Korky, I agree. I'd be happy to cover for Kipper til she's better; being an unemployed, single, insomniac, I have the time. :p

Great ideas , Which all make good and easy to read sense:o

The yellow cards , red etc sounds really good and think it will work once in practice , as i hope it makes some people think more of what they are posting if they are angered. It may just help some people take ten minutes before replying if they are tempered at the time, with the threat of account suspension.

Ive not been on here long myself so i think the newbie idea is a excellent idea too. As i have posted before now and on a few occasions only to find that topics have been already mentioned elsewhere. But i must say on my experience of this i have had a very nice MSE 'ers inform me of that and point me in the right direction, but realise that this is always the case for other newbies.

I think if someone spots something like the Newcastle 5% bond, they should get the credit, and they should work with the team to get the news out there rather than create numerous threads about old news (I don't particularly like to see a whole page of different threads about the same thing)
    .

This is one thing i don't understand. Surely people post voluntarily as individuals to help others and not to build up credit...so why not allow individual post "thanks" but it counts for, and scores nothing on a profile?
That way you allow credit for a post, but don't end up creating "thankoholics" who become obsessed with building up virtual credit ratings?
The people "working" on MSE post under the site name and so carry more reputational responsiblity to give official threads an expert edit, which sometimes takes time to research and get official statements. Sometimes individuals (no matter how well intentioned) simply don't have the clout, legal protection or access.

    A. We're going to see if we can instute a 'newbie bubble' so newbies first three posts will have a brightly designed reminder than they're a newbie and to cut them some slack (it will disappear once they post more). Hopefully for most of our posters this wee reminder will help - I want a "be especially nice to newbies rule"

Martin i don't think this will make any difference personally. If someone is being horrible to a newbie or newbies in general it's because they know they are and having bright coloured reminders won't that that away IMO.People know they are newbiews because they can see they have a very low or zero post count.

Is it also possible to have something on the search like they have on hot uk deals. When you go to post a new offer there before you can it says what threads have been started with that website in the recent past and lists them so you can look and that way saves dup'ing?
Something like that would be very handy on the comps board i can tell you though not sure how it would work not being 'deals' but comps:confused::)

I notice this thread is linked in the arms but what about all the other posters who may not post in the arms or site feedback  Maybe a huge banner at the top of the forum homepage...you know like what they do when the forum is going to be down for maintenance so everyone is aware of these impending changes.

I do see what you mean and I agree. Some people post on IWIWIW congratulating people solely to boost their thanks, and blatantly haven't read the thread, eg I remember a thread where someone was offerig their unwanted prize and someone said something along the lines of "Well done, enjy it".

Same with Quasar; remember the other week where there were a glitch where the thanks we'd given showed up? I realised just how judicious I am with my thanks.:o
