Whilst I agree Orlando is doable without a car I much prefer having the flexibility a car can offer but it is a case each to their own.0
-
It is each to their own so no-one can advise really, just tell you whet they do for their holiday. We do not have a car and e spend less on taxis than we do on hiring a car (thats even before putting fuel in and paying for tolls and parking) so it works for us and we prefer not driving.0

I agree it doesn't seem great for indirect flights - I had mistakenly assumed they were direct (hence the edit!!!!). Cheapest direct flights I can find seem to be more around the £1900 mark - if I could find them for £1400 I would book them immediately!!!! Can you let me know where you can find flights that cheap?
That would be my target price - the way I would achieve it is by monitoring on a site such as www.kayak.co.uk
I'm not personally averse to flying indirect, either.
Have you flown with Virgin before? If yes you may have accumulated some miles and could use them for a miles plus money flight (which would get you a discount, if there are any available for your dates?)0 -
I am thinking of taking my children to Florida in Feb half term in 2012. Just wanted to get some advice as have been to the US before but never Orlando.
My children will be 6 & 8 at the time of travel and I wondered will I be ok without a hire car if I stay in a hotel around Kissimee or International Drive? Also will 7 days be long enough? I don't really want to take them out of school for longer than a day or two and Feb prices seem to be around £2,200 for flights and a 3/4* hotel.
Ideally I'd like to take them to Disney and maybe Wet & Wild but open to suggestions.
Thanks in advance

Kissimmee would not be my choice without a car - you'd be better with International Drive, I'd suggest (though it does depend which part of Kissimmee you'd be staying in, and whether your hotel has shuttles to the parks etc).0 -
going to ORlando end of JUly for a week (its part of a tour of the east coast us) and planning to rent a villa and hire a car. I am surprised by how little information there is on this, considering how many villas are available in Orlando (many owned by BRits). We thought we had found one for £350 for the week but the owner is now quoting a higher price than on the website, so will have to search again. Looking at Glenbrook area, price seems to be about £500.
Does anyone know any better villa / townhouse deals that are not too far out? Need 3 bed at least. Or a large suite - self catering is essential to keep costs down. Flights are airmiles.
We can only afford theme parks for a couple of days but aren't big on them anyway, especially not rollercoasters. Also planning an airboat ride, Cape Canaveral, probably St Petersburg. Any suggestions gratefully received.0 -
Hi I posted previously my Daughter at 18 was going to Orlando April 2011 and had accomodation, due to a change (people who,s family had the villa not going) they now need a package. Hoping to go about 18th April for 10 days, herself and friend at 19, so need transfers and hotel that will have shuttle to parks etc. Any recommendations?0

Hi after I posted yesterday found on Travelrepublic flight for 5th April for 10 days and room only for a total of £556,43 each. flights £100 more the following day and even more than that for their original date of the 8th April. Does this sound a good deal? Does anyone know if they can get shuttle from airport to accomodation (its 3.5 miles from parks etc). Sorry for all the questions, we are new to all this! Ben drives but will be just short of 19 so presume too young for car hire?0

Yes, you can get to accommodation via shuttle from the airport. Depending on how many there are going, it may be cheaper just to share a taxi / pre book car transfer.
I don't think (not sure, never needed to know) you can drive a hire car under the age of 25.
It's impossible to say if it's a good deal or not without knowing what the accommodation is. It sounds OK bearing in mind it's over Easter0 -

No help to Sheilavw, but you can hire a car from age 21. It would involve a loaded premium although USrentacar are not too bad using their Gold insurance. Might be useful info for someone else, sorry Sheila!0 -
Bit the bullet and booked for 2 weeks in October (departing 20th October) staying in a suite - total inc booking fees was £2470. Pretty much got fed up hunting around for flights at prices that simply don't exist so just decided to go for it!
Now to start reading up about theme park tickets!!!
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped!0
