I wonder if anyone here can help, my trusty Garmin with US maps has died on me and I was thinking of hiring one for Florida as we are going to Miami and I am not familiar with the roads etc. I am not sure how much Alamo will charge so I have heard that there are companies in the uK that you can hire from they post them out and you return them, so does anyone have any such recommendations of a good company to use. ThanksFibro-Warrior0

Car rental companies charge about $5 a day,I intended to use copilot on iPhone until I remembered it needed data roaming on to work.
I ended up following signs and looking at map supplied by Alamo, did not get lost found it very easy to drive in Florida everywhere well signposted.
The Orlando to Miami run is nice and straight forward stay on Florida turnpike all the way down to Miami.
Personally I would not bother with a sat nav, cannot help with hiring in this country first time i have Heard it can be done.due to crap miami hotel i ended up doint the run between orlando and miami 3 times all 3 times were ok even when they had severe rain back in mid march, nothing like travelling on our over crowded roads.
i have also used i95 from miami up to kennedy that was fine aswell a bit busier than turnpike but nothing like m6 around the midlands.0 -
'iswimmum'. I second what 'johnnyroper 'states. We have never used a tom tom garmin or phone, in Florida always found it quite easy. Take your time read the signposts.
Last year we went down to Miami without going on the turnpike and it was great and very easy.Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
for not much more than the price of hiring a satnav for two weeks, you can buy a refurb tomtom from totalpda.co.uk
http://www.totalpda.co.uk/TomTom/TomTom-GO-910-Refurbished.6626.html
this one is out of stock right now, but they are getting stock in all the time, so just keep checking.
alternatively, buy a cheaper uk based one, then upgrade it with US maps...
*edit*
I found driving round orlando quite easy, and with a bit of planning, could have gotten round without the satnav, but it's one less thing to worry about when trying to concentrate on driving on the wrong side of the road0 -

You would be better off going to the nearest Walmart.

Not many - only about 17,000 people per week and that's just from the UK!(Florida tourism figures for 2008)! ! !
That is the start of the tourist busy season, (and Hurricaine Season is June - Nov) and the chances in Orlando are pretty rare - although Charley, Frances, Irene, & what ever "L" it was (5 Yrs ago if I remember right) we lost power for ALL 4 of them, and I ended up in hotel!
As Hurricaines gather their strength over hot water, when they hit land, they start to die, and as Orlando is pretty much central from both coasts, by the time they get here they have lost most of their power. In fact if major Hurricaine is comming - people from the coast evacuate to Orlando Area as it is safer.C. (Ex-Pat Brit)

We are a family of 5 and are considering Disney for next year. Can anyone advise on the best time of year to go weather wise, busyness in resort wise and most importantly cost wise as we really want to get a good deal.
My husband is self employed so we can not just lurk and wait for a good deal to come up, we have to plan ahead and ensure he books work around a date.0 -
