The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Conceive when its just not happening (12m+)

Hi. I hope no one minds if I ask a question for a friend?
She was TTC without doing any temperature taking or using any fertility monitors for 1 year and had very irregular periods. She had a swollen tummy and acne flared up and someone asked if she was pregnant and she did a test which was positive. She then suffered a MMC. Found out at first scan that only the yolk sac was present (sorry if that isn't the correct term). This was over a year ago. She has since suffered from depression and been on and off anti-depressants. Her Doctor has advised her not to TTC whilst on anti-depressants, so she was TTC unsuccessfully when not on medication.
She has Googled the medication she is taking and although the manufacturers advise against taking if there is any chance of pregnancy, other websites have suggested that it is safe to take if pregnant.
Does anyone have any experience of this? She is 32 and worried that delaying TTC will reduce her chances of having a child, but currently when off anti-depressants she has no interest in DTD and is very, very low.0 -
Sarah - Good luck with the Zhai Clinic. I just had a read up of it now (can you tell its a slow Friday afternoon for me LOL?). Will you be going for acupuncture? I have a lot more fait in chinese medicine after it sorted out my pre period spotting.

I know, I'm sceptical too. But I have nothing to lose.Chocolate_Cookie_Monster wrote: »I have a lot more fait in chinese medicine after it sorted out my pre period spotting.
I wonder when I'll deflate?0 -
CCM, I think I get the acupuncture as part of the cost of the second appointment. I don't think they do it every time.
CL, anti-depressants and pregnancy are a tricky area. It's like all medication and pregnancy - they can only give guides rather than definitive advice because it would be morally unnacceptable to do a drug trial on pregnant women, so there are never actually scientifically proven studies, only collated experience.
I would say though, that if you friend wants to conceive she needs to concentrate on getting well first. From the way you write her mood is related to her baby loss; she needs to get her GP to refer her to some specialist counselling (my local hospital had a unit just for this) to try and sort it out so that she is in the frame of mind to try again. Pregnancy can be tough on a woman, it's not good to enter into it already feeling depressed and exhausted with life.
Hope that helps.0 -
Thanks Sarah. I might talk to her about conselling, she has a significant family history of depression and did suffer from her first bout of depression before she started TTC for the first time. I have directed her to this thread and suggested trying a CBFM and also talked to her about seeing her GP for fertility testing, as she has tried for at least 18 months and had one pregnancy, which unfortunately ended in MC.
I just want her to be happy and get the baby she so wants.0 -

Don't beat youself up for not giving it your all - the sad truth is that it isn't about how much effort you put in, it's often just luck or lack of it.
Sometimes it seems the harder you try the less likely it all seems - chilled out might be the way forward. I am generally more dispirited in the months when I have 'done everything right' than ever!

QQ - despite my cynicism, I'm up for trying anything really - how much royal jelly do you take and where does one purchase such an item from anyway..?!
Glad you're feeling better - makes sense that an HCG shot would make you nauseous..0 -
CL, make sure your friend knows that those with a general disposition that lends itself to depression are more at risk for post-natal depression too. Although new babies are lovely they are so draining; she should be well prepared for what might be to come. Best of luck to her and to you - you are a kind friend to help her out like this.0

Thanks Sarah. When she went for her first scan they did all the booking in paperwork before the scan, so she had discussed her history of depression with the MW and knows that she is at high risk for PND.0
