Hi all just want to see if this is right what the Doctor told me, here is my story.

I'm 40 have a 22 year old Son, been with partner now for 8 years , ttc for 4 years had a miscarriage 12 months ago. I know I should have gone for help years ago but wanted to get pregnant naturally but it didn't happen and so went for help. I initially went docs and got my bloods checked, went back for results they said everything is fine but they can't help me any further because of my age.

I am absolutely distraught I thought it was up to 42 that you could get help on the NHS but she told me its 39.

Is this true? I thought you lovely ladies would know more maybe.
  • Lowblow - have you seen this?

    Thankyou

Just read through and it says 40-42 if not smoking or have any kids together. We both are non smokers and have no kids together.

I think the problem may be that local health authorities can set their own rules about treatment :
"Implementation of this guidance by CCGs currently varies as it is guidance and not mandatory".

This is from the link above:

"Some CCGs apply additional criteria that affect access to NHS-funded IVF treatment including:
    • criteria related to children, such as no living children from the current relationship or previous relationships, or no children under a specified age living with the couple
    • stopping smoking before being referred for treatment
    • the woman’s age to be within a different range than recommended by NICE
    • the man’s age to be within a specified range"
Hopefully one of the ladies on here will have some more info and help for you :)

I'm in Newham London that may be the problem. I have a 22 yo Son. OH has no children and is 34.

I am going back to see another Doctor though.

Thankyou so much I will have a read through when my head feels a bit more straight.
  • Unfortunately it does depend on which local health authority you come under as upsidedown bear said, they all seem to have their own rules.

In our area they only fund up to 35 (I think) and only if no children already whether from a previous relationship or not. They also only let you have 1 fertilised embryo replaced and not two as some authorities do.

Its craziness, that it differs so much by area. I have even heard stories of couples moving to be in an area that will fund them!
