When your donation is complete the needle will be removed, a plaster will be applied and you will generally be asked to lie still for a short while (especially if is your first donation) and will then be free to go and get a drink and some biscuits.

No lying down today - as soon as the needle was removed and I was asked to press firmly on the pad, I was told to sit up.

Apparently, this is the new method - and I didn't like it one bit. I lay back down and was aked why :o - I told them I had always done it this way. The nurse then said sitting up straight away was more likely to prevent lower blood pressure.

    Is this really the case?

i used to know the answer to this.... been sitting here puzzling about it and i think i remember that if you have a hot drink it can dilate blood vessels and as you dont have as much blood in you as you did, it can lead to blood draining away from your brain faster than it should when you stand up. Something like that anyway. I know the principle, its just hard to describe.

Another donation yesterday, I had to go back to work afterwards and by the time I got home, I was fit for nothing.

Note to self, try to keep diary free after blood donation.

Same thing. I do some emergency services work, riding a motorcycle on blue lights & sirens - http://www.freewheelers.org.uk - and I'm not allowed to donate if I am on duty that week.

Well, my blood sample has been processed & it turns out I'm suitable to donate platelets.
They're pretty keen to get me in - first appointment is later this week!

Welcome on board, I have been giving platelets for quite a while now and find it a very relaxing couple of hours.

I hope and trust that the majority of those who give blood have also signed up for the Organ Donor Card and Register.

If not go on, Live Life, Give Life :j

To sign up if you haven't already done so click

    http://www.uktransplant.org.uk/ukt/how_to_become_a_donor/registration/consent.jsp

alternatively Text the word ‘Give’ to 84118 and follow the simple instructions

    If so then :T

Also a quick reminder to all those who have signed up and moved house, changed name etc you also need to alter your details which can be done on the above link - Cheers
