I went with my friend to hold her hand the other day, and she had the loveliest nurse ever! So we said so, and the nurse was really pleased.

  • Me and him go every four months (I think he goes just so he can chat up the nurses in their uniforms :rotfl: )

If you have never given blood but are thinking about it..... then please GO. Ok so there is a tiny bit of pain but to think you might actually save a life then surely its got to be worth it :heartsmil

There is a shortage of the Blood Group O+ :)

I am O+ but unable to donate, hubby is A+ but unable to donate due to...taking prescribed tablets! Last time he went to give blood he was told that taking his tablets 24hrs before donation was not allowed.
His tablets? Peppermint tablets for IBS!
I could not donate due to taking co-codomol.

I give blood regularly and have since I turned 17, with gaps due to piercings during my wild phases  going again next week, a bit earlier than the 16 weeks but got a letter requesting I go as they are low on blood stocks.

I'm type O-neg and it does make me feel a bit special that they always want me lol, I've had them ring me up before to ask I come to the next session!

Once I start my new job, I'll have a day off each week and will live near a platelet centre so I could give platelets.......does anyone know if I'm more useful to them as an O-neg donor or a platelet donor?

I'm lucky as my employer arranegs for the blood wagons to come on site twice a year an there's not problem with going out to give blood. If you work for a largish company it may be worth seeing if the mobile units can come to where you work.

BTW you can donate if you've had a transfusion so long as it was before 1980, I only started going because I had a transfusion in 1976 after a road accident and wanted to 'pay' back the two pints I'd used. I'm up to 23 units now.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

:( I'd love to give blood but I had a transfusion after 1980 so they will not take me. I would love to be able to give back the 5 pints I lost.

If your platelet count is of a suitable level they would love to have you. I am O-neg and give platelets every 3-4 weeks depending on my shifts, normal minimum is 3 weeks. The sister at the transfusion unit I go to is always on the lookout for more platelet donors, as she says, she gets more and more often from us.
I have been doing this kind of donation now for a lot of years and it has got to the 'automatic' stage now where I dont even have to make a special trip, it is just part of my routine.

I am up to 251 and when I get some sun on my arms the 'tracks' make me look like a junkie. My arms are now so desensitized in that area that I no longer take the local jab.

Me too, I had 2 pints after childbirth in 1983. Between then and when they brought the new ruling in I gave at least 18 times so it was weird how I was suddenly not allowed to give any more.
