Same here.. although I now work in the JC, I signed on in the late 80s & was disgusted with the way I was treated!!

Problem on this forum is... all the small minded folk band all JC staff together & get quite rude about them.
Oops!! Should I have posted this??? Some users don't think I shouldn't be offering advice due to my occupation!!!

Bit hypocritical, you asked Andy not to tar all JC staff with the same brush, but you have a problem with two customers and this is a reason not to be friendly with the rest of your customers.

I can only say that when you've been threatened and abused by 99 people for things that are either their own fault or the fault of someone in a different office, by the time that 100th (nice) person comes along, you're a little hardened and cynical, unfortunately. It's called human nature.

I was on the dole for years, and was an awkward, slippery claimant. I had a bad impression of what job centre staff were (mostly) like. However, when you try sitting on the other side of the desk, you see things in a whole new light. I can't do anything to make you understand that, but you wouldn't believe some things that go on.

Of course, it's the JC muppets who make the rules, innit..???!! Idiot![/QUOTE]

Of course it's not us muppets who make the rules, ministers make the rules us muppets just follow them.

We don't want weekly signing we want to spend more time helping poeple rather than ship em through like cattle.

It is not our fault there is a recession and we have large volumes of people entering our doors, an average office will have over 2000 on its register each required to attend at least once a fortnight, we are now opening till 8 pm three nights a week just to cope with the volumes

    Our fault I think not.

As some people have kindly pointed out most of are good at our job, as a manager I don't get to choose any of my staff they are allocated to me and I have to try to train and work with them. Yes I must admit a couple of them I would not have employed had I a choice but I will try my best to ensure they deal with customers appropriately.

here's my 2 pence worth. all though I did say that !!!! job-c.
I've only found one that was mmmmm how to put it ..unpleasant shall we say to which I mention in one of the post.
I can't fault the staff, like any other jobs we all get sick of it some times.
so less of this foul language stuff eh and behave like adults.
I've worked for over 40 years, never claimed till now.
on average aweek I've sent 3 cv's either by post or email,I've also rang some firms from the phone book.hopefully I might get a job as a assistance carer at a local nursing home ,for old folks suffering with dementia.see I'm trying.how can I prove to the staff at the jc that I've applied for these jobs other than filling in the little booklet that I was given by them.
I don't want to be out of work.I'm 58 soon.
soon on sept 20 I will no longer be able to claim JSA so what happens next? will I still get a little financial help?
anyway folks let keep this clean and no insults to the JC staffs like wise to us.

It works both ways, if a customer has had 99 JC staff that were hardened and cynical then they too will treat the 100th polite and helpful JC member in an off hand manner.

For the record I made a point of thanking and being polite to all of the staff I dealt with (Especially the very rare one that actually interested in you and helped) and even thanked the security staff on the way out (Much to their bemusement). It was very difficult sometimes being polite because quite frankly some of the staff were damn right rude to you as soon as you start speaking (Sometimes even before you start talking) but in the customer service training (and general life skills taught by my family) I have always been taught to treat people how you expect them to treat you and just may it might rub off on them.

In the 40 or so staff I dealt with at the JC I can honestly say that only two were polite / helpful with the others ranging from indifferent to rude.

I can relate to that and I too was also unemployed in the late 80's early 90's recession when signing on we were treated like scum.
Every week I was asked the same question when signing on by the JCP adviser - "Can I ask what you have been doing to look for work during the past 2 weeks" - It was very tempting for me to reply "Oh i have just been sat on my backside waiting for someone to offer me a job for the past fortnight". Now I am asked "how is your job search going ?" which is a more appropriate line of questionning.

I understand what you're saying, but you have to bear in mind that helping people is only part of the job, the other part is checking/testing that they qualify for the benefit in the first place. This is often where problems start. Having both these hats on at once isn't easy.

The more aggressive customers are quick to have a go, but many of them have admitted to me that they couldn't do that job all day, being got at by people like themselves!

    What does that tell you?

The JC staff are following the rules or guidelines laid out for them from up above, i bet they dont like th rules but they have to abide by them, yes sigining on every week does create more work for the staff but theres not much we can do about it

why cant the government ask people that actually deal with the front line what would be best suited to help people. All the big wigs further up the ladder are so out of touch they have no idea what it is like on the shop floor so to speak. At least then people that sign on may have a chance at getting tailored help suitable to the job market and themselves. and not an out dated system that seems to deliberately alienate people.
slowly going nuts at the world:T
