I know what you mean about needing a boost, and its not silly to feel like that!

Accessories are great for adding a bit of 'sparkle' and can really change the look of an outfit. I find Primark really good for these. I've got a few sets of bangles that were picked up for £1 or £2! Its easy to fall in the habit of putting the same clothes together every time, but maybe spend an evening mixing and matching, and you may find you create new outfits from your existing stuff.

And I'm sure you don't look scruffy! x

i know exactly what you mean, a few years ago when we were very hard up i felt just like you, my lovely mil gave me some cash for my birthday and, if you're careful its amazing how much you can get - it gave me so much pleasure to walk in, buy things then take them home and wear them.

i get quite a few bits from ebay, i watch loads of things and set myself strict limits on what i will bid to.

second primark for most things, however ive never found their shoes that good - dont last v long at all

lots of sales and offers on at the mo

    Hi Leedslass,
I agree with the comments said so far. Definately recommend Freecycle. I've lost a bit of weight recently and couldn't afford new wardrobe so posted a message smd received quite a few replies. I'm also in Leeds, but would recommend York & Harrogate if you have transport.
However, I would say that you should invest in some decent fitting underwear! If your underwear fits your clothes will hang better and you'll feel more comfortable.
Btw my 'treat' to feel more groomed is false nails in a French manicure style, bit of faffing but you can buy them for less last £2 from Wilkinson's. buy some nail glue from pound shop and some cheap nail polish & they'll last for weeks!
    Hope this helps

LeedsLass how old are you, what size are you and what kind of job do you need clothes for? I have a wardrobe absolutely packed with stuff I can't wear any more and would happily pass some half-decent togs your way if you're not averse to some pre-loved apparel action

if you're not averse to some pre-loved apparel action

How anyone could be averse to such a wondrous sounding thing, I don't know!:j

LeedsLass - I didn't mean to presume you were aiming to compete with anyone, that's just how your post sounded. I guess my statement would be better worded as 'don't look at others and judge yourself by their standards' - as others have mentioned, they could have bought all their fancy clothes on credit and be up to their ears in it.

You're right that there are more important things, but I always think if you're feeling down or have an issue you should give it the time of day it deserves - yes there are other things going on, but in your life this is what matters now.

Charity shops (the big Oxfam at the bottom of Briggate is good), car boots, Freecycle (join the Leeds network and post a wanted message for clothes in your size, I gave three bags of old stuff away on here a month ago) and jumble sales should be your starting point, along with all the small bits you can do for free.

I am also the not that proud owner of an over flowing wardrobe, small sizes.
If you think this would fit the bill pm me and i'll send a 'brighten me up' package your way.
I'm happy to wear second hand, and happy to pass on to others also.
I hope you are feeling more positive

Hya there. What a fantastic response. Yes I was where you are a few years ago. Had little self esteem so dressed to reflect this. I thought, like you, I had to be ultra fashionable all the time and high maintenance to gain approval and acceptance from people (like the magazines would have you believe). This is not true at all. Have now actually given myself permission to spend money on myself and buy some clothes. Also learned not to compromise and actually buy what I liked not just because it was reduced in a sale or what I perceived others would approve. I still buy plenty in charity shops but I am more discerning and have developed an opinion about what I like. Have found I naturally choose colours that suit me and styles. Now find I get lots of comments about what I wear and am not shy in telling people they are from charity shops. I think this is because I am more confident inside. Yes clothes are not the only aspect of a person and it would be shallow to judge someone on what they wear but good fitting and flattering clothes can make a big difference. Also a friend of mine says a good haircut and neatly plucked eyebrows go a long way. Always go to student nights to get hair cut,Tony and Guy charge £10 for a cut and blow dry which I believe is a fantastic bargain and you get a very good technically accurate cut. I find if the student is very inexperienced the instructor does the bulk of it anyway. So have fun and I wish you all the best.
