Whats the difference between spotting and AF?

I have no normal symptoms of AF - No stomach cramps, spots, achey bones etc. but have brown / very very dark red that requires a panty liner. Normally AF is a lot lighter and much heavier.

Is this spotting or just a change to AF?

Sorry actually meant - a lot lighter in colour! and much heavier in flow.
