now new job saying that they want to give me an offer letter with a start date in May 2010. This means I can put name down for creche (which is the important thing!) but means I won't become an employee until next year - had they told me this instead of saying they wanted me on books before I wouldn't have said anything to current employer!

Thankfully, I've not actually handed my notice in (just said expect a reference) and seeing as I won't be starting work for a new employer until May 2010 I would still be entitled to my 19 days holiday and my maternity leave.

Do you think it's naughty to say to my current employer that job offer has fallen through and that I will just be going on Mat Leave?
Then in April 2010 hand my 4 weeks notice in and start for other people in May.

Why do you need to do this? They can't sack you just because you are pregnant or on maternity leave, so why don't you just tell them up front that your start date in your new job is not until May 2010, so that you will remain employed by them but on maternity leave until that point, and will formally give them 4 weeks notice in April that you don't intend to return from maternity leave. I would imagine they'll appreciate you being up front and honest about it, and at least it means that they can get someone permanent in to replace you rather than having to get someone on a temporary contract. You also don't lose face by having to pretend that your job offer has fallen through when it hasn't.

Oohhhh I want £95 though, booo does it look tacky with clingy fabric on bump.. i been wearing drapey and smocky stuff at the mo..

 I hope not, as I've got this dress and wear it to anything semi-formal! I love it. When you get to a certain point, you can't hide the fact that you are huge and the floaty smocky stuff just make you look like Hyacinth Bucket and 20 years older than you are. This one at least makes you look slim from the back, if not from the front and sides, and is vaguely stylish.

    Thanks Nicki

I agree with you - it will make no difference to them as they aren't replacing me anyway and all my work has been handed over to others. The only problem they will have is to pay me the 19 days holiday which is where the fun starts! They will argue I'm not entitled to it because I'm not returning to work!

I'm in work in a pair of black trousers (with bump band as trousers won't do up!) and a fitted maternity shirt so my clothes are skin tight to my bump!
I love showing it off and couldn't hide it even if I wanted to :rotfl:

But won't they have that argument with you whether or not you tell them now or in April that you aren't coming back? What are you expecting them to do vis a vis holiday pay? Put it in your account at the end of the holiday year as you haven't used it, or pay it to you on your last day of employment as accrued? I would expect the latter, and so the argument will be the same whenever you have it.

They know you are clued up about employment law, so just hit them with chapter and verse about your legal entitlement and make it clear that you will take them to an IT, and get things sorted before you go off, so you don't have to deal with any stress when baby arrives. It's far harder to deal with employment problems which arise due to maternity leave when you aren't actually physically in the office. I found this when I was off on maternity leave with no 1 and my employers got in a muddle, and I think Searching also did when her mat pay was mucked up just after she went off on leave.

I sometimes wear mine with a lightweight (not maternity) shrug which ties at the front, and the ties hang down over the belly button area. It still looks quite dressy. You could find something similar if you have an outie (fortunately I don't, though its getting shallower every day!)

ETA - this is the kind of thing I mean, though its not the same as the one I've got and I didn't buy it from here!

I alternate between baggy and tight things, I don't have a preference. All my smock things are really short so I wear them with leggins and they look good. My belly button is getting bigger but not too noticeable - my yoga teacher said it looked cute
